My situation is, that I am currently in a long distance relationship with a permanent resident in the US. I live in Germany, he was born in Costa Rica and he obtained the status of a permanent resident (Green Card Holder) recently. So my plan is to study over here in Berlin and then move over to the US after I finished, but I don't really know how long the process will take and if I will be able to stay in the US, while my permanent resident status is in process. What are your experiences and what would you suggest, should we do best. I am already really thankful for every constructive answer.

Green card holders(permanent residents) can only file/petition for spouses. So unless you married there is no way for that to happen.

Unless you have some other form of work visa/J-1, ect.. a tourist visa or VWP(if eligible) isn't for living in the US, it's just for visiting.

Say 2 years.

Could he not move to Germany? That would be much quicker.

Okay I see, so would it be smart to marry in a year and then file for a visa, while I am still studying over here?

The thing is, that the career he chose takes way more time than mine.

If you are looking to move in 3 years  then marry and file in the next year.

Well yes he would need to.

I have another question. Will it be a big problem to travel to the US  after we married? Since the border control, as far as I know, does not like immigrants. I am so afraid, that they will deny my entry after that.

You mean on vwp? Well they can deny you if they think you have an immigrant intent.

But isnt it kind of obvious if I have married him already at that point, that I want to immigrate into the country?

Lots of people married to USC'c  visit, as long as you just vist should not be a problem.

Sorry for being a total noob haha I am just really new to all this. So basically what I am going to do is marry him next year and file for the visa and while I am waiting for my visa to be accepted and ulimately also while I am studying, I can visit him with the VWP. Or also maybe make a semester abroad in the US, if that will be a possibility at my university. And after my visa got accepted, I will be able to live in the US or can the Border Control still deny my entry, even though I have got a visa. Also, where should we marry? I can not marry him during a VWP trip, or can I?
