We are both in melbourne. My wife (the us citizen) was a student for the last 4 years here and has applied for aussie residency the embassy knows this and had no problems with it. We havent received notification that it is in sydney however the officer at the embassy said that he was giving it preliminary approval and that it would go in that days last mail to sydney or the first mail tuesday (the next days)mail. I will give you more info as I get it. Thanks mate.

David,

Did they give you any indication of how long the process will take? My hubby is a USC and living here for 6yrs, we are wanting to move back by june/july 2008, so we don't want to apply to early, but if it's longer then we'll put in for it asap.

We are in Sydney

hi Emerald--holding up OK?

Even without any specifics on Consular timeframes, 6 months ahead of your scheduled move is a pretty safe 'guess' if you are filing locally.

Who knew one little change in the law would change your schedule SO much?!

Meauxna,

Yes we are doing fine!! Just glad that we can still do DCF in Sydney because hubby is a permanent resident here.... I wanting to know when to apply as our friends in the USA sent us all the stuff required to sponsor me, and we recieved that in January this year. I don't know how valid it'll be now and we don't want to ask for htem to do it again. So i'm wanting to put it in now so we can use the sponsor stuff, but i know we have 6 months to get there once approved.

Oh so stressful....................is the sponsor stuff valid for 12months?

So it's still 6months roughly even though the whole thing changed

Hi emerald no they didnt give us any indication. I agree that a 6 month time frame before you plan on going is wise, At the embassy however, my wife had a chat to some people who were doing the i-130 as well and they said that they heard that it should take 10 weeks max but as I dont know how they got the information. Good luck anyway.

Emerald, you may be asked for some up to date documents (evidence) as you get closer, but probably only their neweest tax return and some recent pay stubs--won't have to do the whole I-864 over again.
