The following song was published in 1900.

Perhaps it can be admitted that retyping the elegant lyrics brought real tears, and prayers for those who now face Irma.

---

THE TERRIBLE TEXAS STORM

by Thos. J. Kelly (1900)

Verse 1

The sun was brightly shining down in good old Texas state;

All hearts were gay and happy with no thought of cruel fate.

The children played upon the streets without a single care,

While hum of toil and business echoed on the morning air.

But suddenly the sky grew dark; then came the wind and rain

Until the country 'round was battling with a hurricane,

And as the tempest roared and raged, the angry gulf waves sped

Along the coast until a host were numbered with the dead.

Chorus

Many a home with grief is sad, many a heart is aching.

Many a loved one sleeps the sleep that knows no dawn of waking.

Many a life has passed away and stilled a heart once warm,

For lives and homes have passed away in the terrible Texas storm.

Verse 2

In Galveston alone a thousand felt the hand of death

And twenty towns were withered by the cyclone's cruel breath.

And where the happy children played and busy toilers trod

A countless host of helpless lives went forth to meet their God.

How many souls were lost that day, no one will ever know,

But thousands weep with hearts bowed down beneath the cruel blow.

And all the nation mourns September 8th, the fatal day

When Texas felt the storm that swept those lives and homes away.

Chorus
Many a home with grief is sad, many a heart is aching.
Many a loved one sleeps the sleep that knows no dawn of waking.
Many a life has passed away and stilled a heart once warm,
For lives and homes have passed away in the terrible Texas storm.

Yeah, I haven't looked in a while, but know what you mean.  ETA:  Looked, briefly.  I now remember the orphanage thing from a visit to Galveston many years ago.  Terrible past of their history.  Ironically (or not), it happened on 8 Sep.

I used to work out of Cameron, LA.  It was nearly wiped off the map, I am told, not quite as bad as Indianola.  What remains is... kind of desolate, even today.

Hard to find out what happened to Holly Beach, but it was probably turned into matchsticks by Rita.

Busy day making hurricane preparations.  Time for a beer.

Just got a phone call from a good friend that I have not heard from in a while.  He is a climatologist and one of his good friends does modeling for hurricane track forecasting. He has been watching this hurricane.  He told me to GET THE F OUT OF NAPLES.  He begged me to leave.  He says this storm is going to be a killer, and worse than Andrew.  He believes the storm will be a Cat 5 and the eye will go over us in Naples.  There will be catastrophic damage.   Unfortunately I am commited to staying....
