I speculate Texas will figure out a way to make sure the nation still has tacos even post-wall.

No, he's cutting funding to vawa programs like counselling services and things I believe not that part of it

I sure hope he puts some restrictions on it because the abuse of it has gotten out of control.

It has become almost formulaic for spouses for some countries to:

-entrance older spouse, who they wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole in their own country

-move to America, proceed to not touch them a ten foot pole

-claim abuse and file VAWA

rinse and repeat.

It delegitimizes valid VAWA claims.

Speculation...THE most important paragraph in his speech--that could cause lots of other countries to get the ban in the future at his discretion:

"In addition, the United States should not admit those who engage in acts of bigotry or hatred (including "honor" killings, other forms of violence against women, or the persecution of those who practice religions different from their own) or those who would oppress Americans of any race, gender, or sexual orientation," the order said.

These acts apply to many countries! For example, Egypt has the highest percentage (97%) of married women who are victims of FGM (18 other African nations also do it even when outlawed), Pakistan and India do honor killings, Morocco, Nigeria and all countries with sharia law punish homosexuals, and many other countries practice religious bigotry. And it's not just Muslim countries. Myanmar could be included because it persecutes Muslims. China represses Tibetans. So many more possible examples.

See how the order could be interpreted in so many different ways? That makes it VERY threatening.

I see how it could be used too broadly, but perhaps they will apply it individually, i.e. parents who've forced their daughters into getting FGM being banned or engage in underage marriage, etc.  As previous threads have pointed out on VJ, there is no ban right now on bringing in an underage spouse.  Those sorts of things don't align with our current values as a nation.

Weird that most of the other thread was speculation and yet there are 0 speculative posts in here.

Funny, I was reading the other thread thinking "so much for that no speculation thing." Might as well just combine the two now.
