I am going to apply for my N-400 soon and was wondering if I need my wife's birth certificate during the application or will I be asked for it during the actual interview ? She is a natural born citizen and her passport lists the place of birth as the US. We don't have her original birth certificate and was wondering if we had to apply for a copy ? Any guidance would be appreciated !

For the application--just a copy of the USC's passport if applying under the 3-year rule.  If the 5-year rule, no.

For the interview---Sometimes it can depend on the IO.

At my interview the IO said she didn't want to see a copy of my husband's birth certificate (he also is a born USC)....but requested a copy of mine, which kinda threw me a bit since it was NOT a required document in any way for the N400---but luckily I had one on  hand to give to her.

I would suggest at least bringing a copy of the bio page from your wife's US passport if proof of her own citizenship is asked for by your IO.

Better to have something on you and it's NOT asked for---than to not have it, and he/she requests to see it.

For online fillers based on 3 year

How did you file working and residence ?

When i put only 3 years I get a yellow warning that information is missing but i can submit without them with a risk of delay

Did you have problems submitting with only 3 years information ? Any experience is appreciated

I  did 5 years of working and residence , better more then not enough information;)

Getting ready to submit online my N400. 5-year basis. I am already working on it. A couple of questions.

1. I had a couple of tickets which I listed. Problem with listing is that it triggers the automatic request to upload evidence since arrests/citations/detentions are all bundled in one question. However, for traffic infractions with less than $500 in fines (no dui, no drugs involved, no individuals injured), there is a clear statement in the instructions for N400 that additional documentation does not need to be submitted. Did anyone submit the application mentioning the traffic tickets and WITHOUT additional documentation? Does it automatically trigger an RFE? Based on what I read on the forum, sometimes folks got a notice of an incoming RFE within a day from submitting the application - hard to think that the application is read that fast by officers given the backlog so I believe this may be automatic.  I am considering loading a letter under that section (instead of having nothing submitted) stating I had no arrests and no detentions and everything is related to traffic tickets. I saw on the forum that out of an abundance of caution some folks did upload all evidence with the application - sometimes it is not that trivial to track old info (and across states it can be tricky). I wish the application had a button to qualify the submitted citations as traffic citations of a certain type so that they get automatically classified properly.

Also if submitting the letter of clarification, do you load it under the request for evidence related to arrests/detentions (online it specifically says arrests or detentions, not citations) or you load it at additional evidence to be considered (there are a couple of different categories when required to submit evidence)

2. For the green card copy - do folks mostly combine in one file the front and back scans or submit two separate files (one with front and one with back). Not sure it even matters but I though I would ask, just in case anyone has some cautionary tale about one approach or the other.

Thanks

How long the process is depends largely on the field office adjudicating your case, and how quickly you clear background checks.

You can search interview experiences on VJ to get an idea of how they generally go.

It is a good idea to join the Feb filers thread as linked above to get a sense of how other's timelines/experiences are.

1. Some of you mentioned the documents you carried for the interview. Is birth certificate one of them?

2. I am not able to locate mine and was trying to remember the specific action/stage at which it was required. Does anyone know?

3. Did anyone have an experience where they asked for the birth certificate and you didn’t have one?

Thank you.

I took mine to the interview to be safe - they didn’t look at it.
I believe it’s not needed as it would already be on file from your original visa application process
