Selective Service Registration?

Hello, 

 

I am beneficiary. My NVC process completed. My consular sent me e-mail about interview and ask me Selective Service Registration. I really confused about this. I am not citizen or immigrant yet. What is Selective Service Registration??? Please look photos.

It is a requirement for all immigrant males between 18-25.

 

If you receive an immigrant visa after turning 26 you don't need to enroll.

Selective Service registration is not only for US citizens. See the chart below (specifically under "Immigrants"):

mate I am not immigrant either. I haven't got SSN yet.

You are applying for an immigrant visa, and will be one. You will need to register (if you're in the required age range) once you're in the US.

Correct. They may have you fill out this form at the interview, but I've heard that doing so is outdated and varies by embassy. It's not the registration itself, but a confirmation of your awareness of the requirement to do so once you enter the US within 90 days.

  It is a requirement that you register if you are in that age.  NOT registering will be a problem if you want to become a USC.  That being said  I am over 60 and they last time they drafted registrants was when I was in high school.

The biggest issue is you would usually need to wait until you turned 31 to be able to apply for naturalisation, even if your lack of SSS registration is deemed "willful". It isn't a permanent bar.

if I recall correctly when I was getting student loans part of the fafsa (federal student aid) asks if you were registered for it. that was my motivation for doing it.

This is correct. If one fails to do so, you're in for a really, really complicated process if you ever want student aid.

OP in not saying he doesn't want to register. He is just confused how to do so, not being in the US yet.

 

 

OP, I think for your interview the consular wants you to fill out and bring in the "Fillable Registration Form".

3 options are given there:

1. Register online - a SS# is required,so this is not your option.

2. Outside US Register online - the same, a SS# is required.

3. Fillable Registration form - "if you have a social security number and you are not able to register online, or if you do not have a social security number, or if you are an immigrant male (documented or undocumented) age 18 through 25, please complete the fillable registration form here" .   This is for you i believe.

When you AOS from a K1, they automatically register you, yes? Funny/headache story, we mailed the AOS package the day before my husband's 26th birthday. The green card was aproved 6+ months later. So... not sure what they did.

You cannot assume that they will automatically register you. The burden is on the immigrant unfortunately to check that they are registered, and if they are not, do so within 30 days of arriving.
