Traveling on Extension Letter?

There have been quite a few posts recently regarding traveling on an expired GC with the one year extension letter.

 

Page 38 of this document provides some reassurance:

It also makes clear that the 12 month extension is from the card expiry date, not the receipt date of the I-797.

Interesting to see it actually spelled out in an official document! I'd not seen this one before. Thanks for posting. If only the DMV, etc. knew and believed this everywhere... :-)

This would be a good document to have saved on your phone or other device when travelling or going to the DMV etc, - It falls to us to educate the people who don't understand the system... we can make life easier for those who come after us!

This is great information @Derwood!!! There is finally an official document that ends the discussion whether the 1 year extension is from the date of NOA or the GC expiration.

Yes....impressed that it also shows pictures of the stamps that baffle people who haven't seen them before.

Thanks! Hopefully it will be of use to someone! I'll certainly be printing the relevant bits when I travel on my expired GC in June.

This is very good information.  Personally, I saved the document for further reference.  I also reported this to the moderators as in my opinion, this thread should be pinned for others to reference.

Excellent! We printed off a couple relevant pages for my wife to carry when she travels (mostly showing that the extension letter really is a thing and whom the check-in agent should contact if any questions arise).

Do you still need to go to a kiosk to print the form which is presented to the immigration officer or do you just go directly from the line to the immigration officer's booth?

 Coming back to the US last week I mentioned to the agent directing people to kiosks that I had an extension letter and she sent me straight to an immigration officer.

Yes, my wife had the same experience.  Apparently, you cannot use the kiosk if you have an extension letter.

What about at check-in for the flight back to the US? Did the airline employees at the check-in counter raise questions about the expired GC and did they know that the extension letter extended GC validity by 1 year from the expiration date?

 

I'm traveling soon on expired GC with extension letter. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
