Which version of the pneumonia vaccine do I need? I went to the clinic near my house and they had two versions of the vaccine:

  • Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13 or Prevnar 13®)
  • Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23 or Pneumovax23®)

Which one will they want me to get?

If you haven't got a flu shot before, it is recommended to get PCV13 first then PPSV23 after a few months interval. :)

It will depend on your age and whether you have certain high risk conditions, like diabetes, kidney disease, are a smoker, etc. If you're 65 or older, then you need both. If you're younger than 65 and you have a high risk condition, then you just need the Pneumovax 23. Certain extra high risk conditions also require the Prevnar-13 if you have them and are younger than 65.

Also, you can't get both of them at once. You really should wait a year between them.

I checked your timeline and saw you are Canadian as well.  Do you know for a fact that we need the pneumonia vaccine? I was told (and according to one of the panel physician websites) that for my age I am only required to get the MMR, tetanus/ diphtheria (both of which I've had already), varicella (don't need bc I've had chicken pox) and then the flu shot if it's flu season for my interview (which it shouldn't be).  I just don't want any expensive surprises at the medical!!

Actually, I'm American (and a physician, but not a panel physician). My fiancee is the one from Canada. As far as I know, the pneumonia vaccine does not appear to be required, unless you're over 65.

That's according to http://www.visadoctor.ca/usa.
