I'm sponsoring my husband for a visa. I noticed on the I-864 form refers to the adjusted gross income.

Would my adjusted gross income need to be above the income requirements established in the 2017 HHS poverty guidelines?

How does it work if i'm self employed and have many write offs?

What if my current income 2017 is above the poverty guideines but my previous 3 years were not?

Yes.

It works the same... they go by the adjusted gross income.

If your 2016 income was below the guidelines you should consider a joint sponsor or see if you have assets that can make up the difference. While its true that they care more about current income, they also want proof that you can maintain income over 125% of poverty guidelines. If your 2016 tax returns will show that you are below, you will definitely want to have proof (such as a long-term contract with a client) of your current income.
