(another) social security card question for a K1 visa

Maybe that is for K1 who have applied for EAD upon entry into USA.  IDK but we checked not allowed to work, because at the time of application you are not able to work until EAD is received.  Wait, and ask the case worker at the SS office when you go if you are unsure.

Once you receive a work permit, you will need to update your SSC. The process is easier. You will also get a new SSC.

It will only change when the person gets a green card, not ead

You're only allowed to check "allowed to work" if you have a permit. IF you have not yet received a permit, you're not allowed to work. If you have not received a work visa yet or EAD, you check "legal alien NOT allowed to work." Just because you have a pending application, don't assume you're allowed to work. It can potentially get denied.

A k1 is an alien allowed to work, that's what they should mark on the ss form. The ssn will come with a note saying they're only allowed to work with authorization from the dhs, which is the Ead.

please don't give bad advice.

We completed the application and marked not allowed to work.  His SS card is stamped "valid for work only with DHS Authorization".  No letter came with his card.

The SS case worker knew that he was here on a K1.  We talked with her quite a bit.  She never told us we marked the wrong box.  From past posts I have read, each SS office can vary in their information and process, which does not surprise me coming from a government office.

OP, print 2 applications. Mark one not able, mark one able.  Take them and ask your local SS office which is correct.  It seems everyone here has a different experience.  No one in intending on giving you bad advice.

I apologize if that was the wrong advice. I just remember going back to the SS office 3 times, before and after marriage and then once more when I got my green card, I followed mty own advise back then. Obviously, go with what the webpage tells you as that is regulation.

A K1 category is allowed to work as per social security policy. That's the whole reason why we are eligible for a SSN with the i-94. Now, DHS have other policies....so by immigration policy we can work once we get the EAD.

To answer your questions and share our experience:

1. No need to wait until your record shows up in the SAVE database. We foolishly waited. Nothing in the database after 2 weeks. We went anyway to the SS office (with the printed out electronic I-94), and got his social security card in the mail in 4 days.

2. Marriage probably makes no difference, though we went after our civil wedding.

3. The SS office makes copies of documents and does not keep any original.

4. Yes. Also: once you have a SS number you can apply for credit cards. But to add anyone as an authorized user to your credit card, you don't actually need his SS number.

1) If the I-94 is electronic now, do we still need to wait 2 weeks to go to a SS office?

2) My fiance and I plan on getting married within days of his arrival. Does it still make sense for him to go to the social security office before the wedding? Or is there no difference?

3) Does the SS office keep the certified copy of the birth certificate or do we get to take it back?

4) Can I use this social security number to add my fiance as an authorized user to one of my credit card accounts, to start building up his credit, or are there limitations?

The SAVE Case check that you yourself can do online doesn't check the SAVE database it checks the progress of any inquiry made by an agency to the SAVE database. Until you apply at the SSO nothing will show up there.
