Just in case anyone was still doubting that the Republican Congress would be jumping to please President-elect Trump, several members of the House of Representatives are now working on ways to quickly build his promised Mexican border wall. And you can bet this is going to happen for one simple reason: For Trump and the Republicans, it's the political gift that keeps on giving. And it doesn't even matter who pays for it.

Something too many people have forgotten about the border wall is that the American people actually want it. They've wanted it for years. They're wanted it at least since President Bill Clinton starting to promise to improve border security with new barriers back in 1995.

With that support in mind, the fact that there's been so much partisan opposition to and "expert" derision of Trump's "build the wall" plan just goes to show how skewed and corrupt politics and political punditry has become in America.....Snip

To be honest, while it doesn't necessarily have to be a HUUUGE WALLL...the way Trump has described it, I don't understand people's opposition to actually having a formidable obstacle at a border. I mean, it is a border isn't it? Unless you support open borders, which some, like val, do at least to a degree, isn't it common sense to at least have a decent fence at a sovereign country's border?

Well, the Canadian border is about as porous as it gets. Not EU level open, but pretty lax.

 

I just don't get how a Wall is going to be helpful when they've got these going on down there South of the Border. Trump might be a good builder, but the Mexicans seem to be genius tunnel engineers:

There's actually ways to detect tunnels too.I talked the other day about the "Israeli experience" with a wall/fence. There's also real life experience with tunnels as well

But honestly if Trump just focuses on the Wall, I feel like that's one of the areas where he could do the least damage, lol. Still, I don't think it's going to be a magical fix-all even if it does get built/created...

personally i'm more concerned about the state of education in this country and all the total friggin idiots we're churning out in droves. and i know full well a trump administration is only going to further annihilate public education. way i see it, future generation is going to be saddled with the debt of a gaudy yugely expensive wall that serves no purpose and is mostly empty, massive tent cities of impoverished 'new russians' thriving all along both sides.

Totally agree. I'm a little disappointed that education isn't taken more seriously as a societal issue. As a person working as a teacher now, it's just ridiculous how hard the job of a teacher is. And the university system is a mess as well. The whole system is going to rot with the implosion of the student debt situation....ironic that we'll be building a wall to keep people out when the destruction is going to come from the inside it seems.

i don't know much about the university side of things, but at elementary/middleschool/highschool -what i've been seeing the past 10 years with my son's experience - no bueno.

I am in favor of having a border, always have been and always will be. Now, if you read what I post in my thread which I know you don't, you realize I have quite a bit of criticism against some of Trump's plan and how much they are going to cost. We are easily looking at another $1 trillion to the deficit, I completely agree. However, that doesn't negate or change the fact a more serious obstacle is in need. I didn't say it has to be a massive wall. If the Israeli  taxpayers could foot the bill for the west bank barrier, you're looking at only 4 times the length here. Will he be able to get mexico to pay for it? Honestly I'm not going to pretend I know the outcome of that either way. He may or he may not. There are ways to make people pay for stuff without actually having them write you a check. Now, if he doesn't, and especially if he wants to lower taxes, again, the only way is increasing the deficit. I still don't understand how in principle anyone can be against having a border. Even at a cost.
