Multiple dead, at least 8 injured in shooting at Ft. Lauderdale airport

Btw, this was a person who reportedly was charged with beating and strangling his gf (thankfully she's still alive)... and still managed to have the charges dropped, and his weapons were not taken away. So if we can't take a gun away from someone for that or constant mental health issues... I guess we can't take them away from someone who starts acting all nutty in front of the FBI either.

I'm guessing there just isn't an official protocol for it yet. Given the touchy subjects that are gun rights and mental health, it tends to pop up whenever there is a mass shooting but quickly swept under the rug again as it fades from the news. Sad really, it's a serious problem that needs to be resolved.

 

Of course he could still steal a gun or try to obtain one illegally if his license had been revoked, but being able to check it through on an airplane? That's something only legal owners can do.

First, in most parts of the US one does not need a license to purchase or own a gun.  Also a license is not needed to check that gun in luggage at an airport.  I know in my state a gun can be carried in a car without a license as long at is secured, meaning it is covered.  Could be in a gun case, could be in the glove compartment, could be in a shoe box with a cover.  All legal.

 

Not sure what happens when one has a carry permit and has it pulled for a reason such as mental incompetence.    The real issue here as in other similar incidents is allowing mentally disturbed people to have or keep guns.

I could well have used the word clip and this sentence would only serve to make me feel like an idiot if I did.. not actually teach me anything. Was following this on the news yesterday as I'm sure many of you were. They were talking about that the FBI gets so many of those ppl walking in wanting help... and refered to what would actually the civil rights implications be if every such person was just locked up... That's going a bit extreme ofc.. but definitely it would make sense to create a legal avenue for over-seeing such a person's access to firearms.

 

Also, he had a few of these apparently ... (that I don't know what to call :p)  in his bags.. used more than one ... one person inside being interviewed after had said that they were wondering how he could fire so many times when the weapon was a handgun.

Please excuse my use of the word 'clip'. It was egregious of me. I would endeavor to correct it, as it bothers you, but alas you can only edit in a limited timeframe.

 

I think we can all agree that no matter the terminology used - the bullets exited the gun as he murdered people, and that our subject should not have had his grubby hands on the weapon. Hopefully one day, we can figure out something to correct this issue.

Just think how deadly it could have been if he had an assault weapon, which is so much more lethal bullets than handguns, and such menacing hand guards

Flight was Alaska-Minneapolis -Florida. Nothing at all to do with Canada. The handgun was his only checked luggage, which he took into the bathroom to load.  He was discharged for failure to perform in his duties, General Discharge, so less than Honorable, was AWOL several times.  Meant to be in court in Alaska in March on some sort of mischief charge., the charge for assault was dropped.

a clip does not have a spring.
a magazine does have a spring.

the only firearm i can think of that use a clip is the m-1 garand

There is no need to apologize. Everyone knew exactly what you were talking about. 

 

I have called magazines, clips my entire life and most of the people I hunt with do the same. Mind you I shot my first deer at nine, spend 7 years as a professional waterfowl outfitter and have killed more critters than 99.9% % of people who own a gun. When I go hunting with one of my rifles I put my extra clips in my pocket.

This is what I heard as well as I don't think you can transport a weapon into Canada even if it is checked. There might be exceptions, but I always remember the Canadian boarder protection asking if I had any weapons when I crossed the border in Sarnia.
