We had a baby last Oct - total bill was $23000 though insurance covered $21000. Medical care in US isn't cheap so  honestly without insurance coverage you will be looking at a hefty bill.

Since your wife has just found out she's pregnant look up birthing in the US. It may surprise you just how bad having a baby in the US is. They are not top for having babies they are actually pretty low, because of how many unnecessary medical interventions doctors will do here. You didn't say what country you are in but many countries are well ahead of the US in this department.

If you just found out about the baby, I don't see how she could have a US birth on a 3 month visa. Am I missing something?

As others have noted, as a tourist, she is not eligible for medicaid. You've been provided an estimated range of childbirth costs. A tourist is required to purchase medical insurance prior to travelling to the US.

Since when?

I am not sure why you think birth here is best.  It is actually a horrid production type of experience.  You are rushed into leaving the hospital so they can pump the next one out ,  they are apt to declare a c section is needed if it looks like you will deliver in the middle of the night or during the doctors scheduled golf game.  Do your baby a favor and let it be delivered in a more natural setting somewhere far away.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Travel Insurance would not cover Birth expense. Well have to be a pretty exceptional situation, not planned as in this case.

Having given birth in both the US and in Europe I can assure you the birth process in the US is horrible. If I had a choice I would much rather give birth in a country where they respect the mother and don't treat her as a walking incubator. Also in the US they are notorious for doing unnecessary procedures without permission.

My wife and I must be the odd one out in regards to child birth in the US. We went to a birthing center, but never felt rushed. This was for both our son. Honestly I cannot compare the experience to another country, since both my son's were born here.

key words...birthing center

Not all hospitals have nice birthing centers or maternity wards.

I am writing this for a friend. She just received her conditional green card after being married four about 7 months. She genuinely fell in love with her husband and now has reason to believe that he has in the past and currently is cheating on her.  Now that she has suspected that something is going one, he is accusing her of only getting married to get her Greencar, etc. He has been picking fights with her and just contradicting everything. It is absolutely not the case. She's college educated, kind and beautiful inside out. She is more educated than him and he is not verbally abusing her.   In any case he is threatening with annulment or divorce? What recourse does she have? Can she get a job with a conditional permit? Can her employer sponsor her.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I would like to do as much as I can to help her get through this.  I should mention that she has stated that if she is going to be treated the way she is, she would rather go back to her home country but of course would like to continue her life in the US to help her mother back in her home country.  She is no way wants to stay with this man if he is going to treat her with the disrespect that he has shown in the short 6 months that they have been married.

TIA!

Wow, I guess we are fortunate in Hawaii.  We have excellent hospitals, birthing suites, etc...  The cost of living here is very high but perhaps you get what you pay for?
