being military there are certain aspects why we are doing it now.  Big ones are family being here for the wedding, and the easier transition going there accompanied rather than the government messing things up from the bureaucracy.

Well you can just go to have a court "wedding"... just for the paperwork...and then have a wedding ceremony with family when time comes.. many VJ'ERS do it this way since immigration times are hard to predict.

I don't understand the latter part ..what do you mean about going where accompanied?

Naturally it is up to you two ..it just looked like the CR1 would have fit well into your future plans :)

Don't forget the cost for the medical as well, that one is usually quite pricey. She needs to have one no matter what visa you decide to apply for.

it says the I 1-29 filling fee is 535, so i'm assuming I can't just pay 340 to USCIS now and then the 265 to the consult when it gets to them? you have to pay it up front??

It seems they would or should waive or offered a much cheaper rate for active military

If I was in charge of USCIS it would be that way

They do in a way.  You only have to make 100% the poverty guidelines for the I-134 and I-864 vs 125%. Also deployment is pretty much a guaranteed expedite.  Even as a cr1 you could try to expedite because you're moving back to the USA.

Not much of a break doing 100 instead of 125%, heck some countries don't require 1-134 anymore.  I would like to see fee's waived for active military.

Keep in mind that there will be other expenses in between the filing fee and the visa fee. As someone mentioned you will have to pay for the medical exam, that can be a few hundred dollars. She also might have to pay for some vaccines at that time. There's also the police certificate (ranging from $100-$300). You may have to mail original documents to each other, and international mail can be expensive. There may be fees for her to get copies of original documents such as her birth certificate (I knew someone who had to pay 200 euros for her birth certificate!). You don't need to pay for all these things right at the beginning, but you should know that they will be coming in the months after you file so that you can plan for them. And of course, as soon as you finish the K-1 process and get married, you will have the green card fee which is over $1,000.

Just wanted to make sure you were aware of these expenses so you don't get blindsided by them. Good luck!

I'd be concerned about the filing fee for AOS. If $195 is difficult now how easy will it be to come up with the $1225 for the I-485 + Biometrics. You might want to sit down, read the guidelines for the K-1 or CR-1 and associated costs for each one. How each one fits your timeline is another consideration.

accompanied lets me stay there for 2 years otherwise ill end up back here and deploy again.  This whole thing is a headache, worth it but a headache.  we were aware of the other fees just things that came up as we were about to mail our packet off so now its delayed another week or two.  and technically we cant get the court house marriage because she leaves in like 2 days and it wasn't the intent of her getting married this time.  we had a few friends who did that and are having a harder time now.

I see :)

Harder in what way? And well good luck with your filing! And you'll just be married in a couple of years instead, and you'll have time to save up for the AOS part at least.

You two make a very cute couple btw! :D

The old fee for filing i-129f was $340 the new is $535. This is payed upon filing.

https://www.uscis.gov/forms/our-fees

In step 2 when the fiancée applies for the visa at the overseas consulate/embassy they pay for the visa application to be processed there. .. as far as I remember thats $265.

Hello i’d just like to ask because im new here and im really confused with all the terms and stuff. I hope someone can help me with this i’d really appreciate it.

So my bf is from michigan. My first question is,

1. does he have to mail the i-129f packet all the way to dallas or he can drop it off at USCIS detroit office?

2. If he mails it, does he have to include the actual check (535$) inside the packet, or can he pay thru the bank?

3. When should we pay the 535$?

Thank you so much.

Please post your own questions in your own thread. Thank you.

1) The I-129F packet is always sent via mail to the Texas lock box. It will then be scanend into their system and assigned to CSC (California) for processing. There is no option to drop it off, and the local field office cannot accept I-129Fs anyway (I-129Fs are handled by service centers, not field offices).

2) Payment must be via check or money order, or via credit card using the new form that came out a couple months ago. There's no option to pay via bank transfer directly.

3) The fee is paid when you file. Failure to include payment at the time of filing will result in the packet being rejected and returned.
