Why can't you file your taxes Married Filing Separately and put NRA for non-resident alien at the place where it asks for her SSN?

Once she comes to the US and gets her SSN you can amend your taxes to Married Filing Jointly.

I talked to my accountant and this is what we will do.

Thank you.

You are welcome. I understand you'll be out of money until you can amend it, but it's just least amount of hassle this way.

No you cannot send the passport my husband tried and the certified copy is accepted form just go to irs page of itin accepted identification it tells you there. Do an amendment , I got a nice fat refund by doing that. And no one tells you all you need its sometime trial and err. This forum has taught me lots of good things.

I ran into this exact problem. Here is what you need to do. File your 2015 tax return ASAP. After the gets here and get her SSN you can file an amended return.
i had to file 2 amended returns. My wife would have gotten denied at the interview I hurried up and filed and got the tax transcript and sent it to her.

Like literally 1 week before her interview. I also did file an ITIN number for her and it was denied. Waste of time don't even do that get the taxes filed ASAP because waiting longer you might have to file 2016 with out her. My wife didn't work at the time so it worked out for claiming her as an exemption when she did get here after we got her SSNumber.

This will avoid all the red tape and filing for an ITIN which she probably won't get anyway. Don't delay that 2015 any longer.

We just received the original certified copy of my husbands passport back from IRS and they said his w-7 was being processed, I hope that means accepted and being assigned a number for iron.
