Ohio bill restricting abortions to before a heartbeat is heard

Hasn't yet been signed by Kasich, and I don't really recall his stance on the matter. Limiting abortions to before a heartbeat is heard is, for a start, completely arbitrary and just "tugs on the heart strings" of those who don't actually understand fetal development. Also, more practically, many women don't even know they are pregnant by the time a heartbeat can be heard depending on how closely they are following their menses. So basically you are de facto banning it all together except for the women who are actively seeking pregnancy and are checking regularly. Those women are unlikely to want termination as an option anyway. It also severely limits the knowledge you can provide parents in terms of genetic syndromes and conditions that may be fatal at birth or very severe. Practically all of them aren't known by 6 weeks.

Also more generally, I really have a huge issue with how people can add completely unrelated "amendments" onto bills that are about different topics. The original bill was focused on reporting child abuse. This law should be it's own separate bill. There needs to be a limit on what you can "amend" to bills.

exception only for the life of the mother. rape, incest?..tough.

According to that article there aren't exceptions for rape or incest. I haven't actually looked at the real bill though.

My other problem with using a heartbeat to define "life", is that we would then have to go back and change our definitions for death. Patients are brain dead all the time with a heartbeat. You essentially need no brain for the heart to beat. It means nothing.

It's a designation clearly picked by non-medical experts. If a doctor was involved in making the decision they have sold out their career and fellow physicians for either their religious beliefs or for political points.

Well also vary easy for a man. If he wants to pledge to never get anyone else pregnant, that's a little closer. Still not the same though.

bush-head-scratch.jpeg

Bilharziasis: a parasite infection by a trematode worm acquired from infested water. Also known as schistosomiasis. Species which live in man can produce liver, bladder, and gastrointestinal problems. Species of the schistosomiasis parasite which cannot live in man cause swimmer's itch

A pheochromocytoma (see the image below) is a rare, catecholamine-secreting tumor that may precipitate life-threatening hypertension. The tumor is malignant in 10% of cases but may be cured completely by surgical removal. Although pheochromocytoma has classically been associated with 3 syndromes—von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome, multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2), and neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)—there are now 10 genes that have been identified as sites of mutations leading to pheochromocytoma.

Never heard of it referred to as Bilharziasis, only know it as schistosomiasis.

Not sure if this is some inside joke or anything...neither of those things would necessarily make a man sterile.
