We are a nation of laws, Charles. You should certainly be aware of that. You should also be aware that we are a constitutional democratic republic, and not, in the case of many other nations a type of theocracy, where religion has no separation. Now does it mean that in the opinion of Americans that believe in liberty and freedom for all that this behavior is unacceptable? Sure. But we have to acknowledge that these countries is not our country. I have been very critical of the President of the Philippines treatment and outright murder of people he calls criminals in his country. Things that would be outlawed in our country. I remember being told I had no right to criticize this because I do not live there and it's acceptable in that country, so to shut up. Likewise I think we Americans should be careful. We have to further our ideals about liberty and freedom for all, without making unwise judgments on a people as a whole. Imagine walking into Puritan America and demanding that we stop burning people to death (or stoning them or a ton of other 'punishments' we felt was right and Biblical), or imagine walking into the days where the Catholic church ruled the UK with an iron fist and telling those in charge what they did to heretics and apostates was disgusting. You'd have a hard time finding support. People that live in those countries with types of theocracies don't know any better. That is their way of life. Principles of freedom and liberty can help to change this over time, but it isn't a far stretch to see that there are all sorts of Christians (I'd even say many millions) that would like to see America return to those good ol' Puritan times.

But to answer your question about someone in America: The suspect in question said it must be done because the Bible told them so. You'd say that person was obviously insane. But had we been living in a different time in America, this would be perfectly acceptable to us. The person in question claimed he killed his victim because the Bible told him so. Likewise, people in theocracies do the things they do because they also believe their religious books and faith leaders tell them that is what they must do. But the modern world doesn't even have to rely upon theology for an excuse for their brutality. Women are raped and murdered every day in the US. By the time it's taken me to type this message out, several will have already taken place. Should we then argue that there is something wrong with our supposed Judeo-Christian cultural identity in America based on the statistics of abuse, violence, and rape towards gays, children, and women? Perhaps we should get our own house in order.

Honor killings is not exclusive to Muslim theocracies or that particular religious custom as we tend to portray it. In areas where Christianity is rare, such as Pakistan you can find this Christian honor killing. I would suppose he would say the Bible gave him an affirmative for doing this as well as the culture. While one Christian activist in the article describes it in terms of a cultural thing of that particular region which then perverts the religion, Christians and Jews in Jordan, for instance have reported to commit honor killings. And while a little more complex to find info on, you can indeed find instances of it happening in a variety of religions and cultures around the world.

I am sure we all know nice muslims in our daily lives. And jews. And christians. And catholics. And whatever other religions our friends are.

But tell me this... What is the primary religion of Iran, Pakistan, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Afghanistan, et al.?
