The alt-right was born out of necessity. The reason can be traced to this:

"The demographics race we're losing badly," Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) told the Washington Post. "We're not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business for the long term."

Of course what Lindsey Graham meant was the Republican party had to become more diverse. I don't think the establishment intended to take it the other way. Then this movement came along and said yes, we can make more angry white guys. There was no alt-left. The alt-right was born for a specific purpose and for that purpose they need an opposition. The alt-left is a creation of the imagination of the alt-right.

The central issue is that people were not really that angry. Consistently, 80+ percent of people in all walks of life say they are satisfied with their life. You can manufacture anger and even make a revolution out of that. History has shown that over and over. What you can't do is sustain that forever. Who do you scapegoat next time around? I'll give Trump this - no one knows how to make angry white guys better than him.

Doesn't matter what label you put on the crazies of the alt-right, they exist. Just as there is a group on the left who are just as insane. The outliers usually are.

The narrative that the alt-left created the alt right has been going on since before Trump won the election. We've heard that the political correctness, over reactions and labeling of the left created this movement that propelled Trump to victory. It's simply not true.

The alt-right wasn't created because of the extreme left, they were created so that the Republican party didn't have to move to the middle. However to continue existing, the alt-right does need the extreme left. Sometimes they can find one. When they can't, they'll make it up. With make believe being central to their ideology, it's not that hard to do. As Goering said, dragging the people along is the easy part.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say, exactly, and not sure who created whom. What I am saying is there are far left crazy people, as well as far right crazy people. They have existed for much longer than this most recent election. Whether or not they had a title before now is irrelevant.

Indeed. Gatlinburg was a beautiful place. The Smoky Mountains are where I want to retire if I stay in the US much longer.

I'm not sure one loud mouthed jerk qualifies as a movement. If that's the thinking, I can see why some are so scared.

This guy lost his job and his fiance over this apparently. The alt-right is a little more nefarious than obnoxious ranting, and now, thanks to their new empowerment, probably with less consequence.
