Hi Everyone.

I am in dire need of advice.

I just moved to NYC from Germany (I have German citizenship only) in Sepetmber on the K1 and married my USC Fiancé two weeks ago (in New York State).

We are currently preparing to file for AOS.

Now my mother wrote to me with a surprising information: My family lived in Virginia for 3 or 4 years starting in 1993 (when I was just an infant) for my dads work. Now she just informed me that she had coincidentally found my Social Security Card with the Number on it. I had no idea I even had a SSN - I obviously didn't have a job since I was just a baby. Since my dad passed away years ago (who was the one who was legally employed in the US in the 90s) and my mom didn't really handle the visa-things she had no idea either.

Now I'm unsure what to do. I do have the number but I stated "does not apply" on my K1-Visa and on my Marriage certificate since I honestly didn't know I had one.

Does anyone have any advice what I should do before filing the AOS? Do I need to inform the Embassy where I filed for the K1 that I just found out I have a SSN? Should I inform the Marriage Bureau or USCIS? The NYC Marriage Bureau seemed disinterested in the SSN and although they asked my husband and me for it, his isn't actually on the certificate.

Would really appreciate advice.

Won't matter. SSN not required to marry or file for AOS. Won't invalidate your marriage if you had no SSN to give them.

Go to the SSA and update your status with them as a K-1 visa entrant. Take your old SSN with you along with your passport and I-94. Your number will stay the same.

Thanks KayDeeCee for your advice! I'm just worried that it will cause problems since I technically DID have a SSN when we got married - I just didn't know -.

I agree, not much to worry about. Just follow through with the status change at the SSA.

Good Luck

Your social security number issued back then was based on your father's work related visa and visa's for his dependents. Yes, follow the advise given. But your old SS# might be under a different category because it was a non immigrant visa so it may not be able to adjust over. I could be wrong.

Social security numbers are for tax reporting purposes and stay thesame whether you were a non immigrant or not. Your status can be updated with the SSA but the number stays the same and is yours for life.
