Maybe you should sit tight and wait till next week to see if the check is cleared or not. Sometimes, the USCIS hotline or even the local office people might give you the wrong / outdated information.

Interesting. So the actual NoA was 2 weeks before you actually got notified of it? Did you include an 1145 with your application and did you see the check clear before then or was it a surprise?

I've included an 1145 but no word on that yet given it's the weekend. The check has not cleared yet.

Update: The check has cleared this morning! In my account it's listed as "USCIS DALLAS PAYMENT" so it sounds like it must have been sent back to Dallas and now will find its way back to California?

I haven't received an NOA1 yet via email or text yet, but I'm happy to see it has cleared. :)
