Look at the expiration date on the visa.

we don't have the visa on hand.

i've read somewhere that the visa is valid for 6 mos starting from the medical date. i don't know if that applies for everyone

visa stamp should be on his passport

and yes, you must travel within 6 months of the medical exam

don't wait till the last day as you can't count on weather especially in January

i once was iced in in Paris among other places

He is talking about the weather in the US. If there is a huge snow storm in the city you are flying into you will not make it. Trust me, I got stuck in my wife's country a couple of days because there was a snow storm in New York area.
