My boyfriend took an interview at the embassy yesterday. I was confused when he said the results are still unsure since you would barely know if you pass or fail. The interview went well and the consulate didn't say anything if he's approved or what, she just simply said "okay" and took his passport which is a good sign because it's not denied. Now, when we checked the visa status it says " refused ". How come? Please i need some answers. ?

They took his passport which is a good sign but it's possible they did an additional review after the interview and need more information. They have not contacted him to pick up his passport.

Thanks for replying. No they haven't contacted him to pick up his passport. And as soon as the interview ended yesterday we checked the visa status right away to make sure if it was approved. So now we dont have any idea what's going on. ?

Why didn't he use his words and ask, "Does that mean I am approved?"

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package

I did tell that to him too but he said the consulate was in a hurry after saying " okay next please" while taking his passport and placed to the drawer since there's still a lot of people waiting to be interviewed.

Unfortunately there is no way anyone in here knows the answer to your questions.. only the consulate knows, and I'm afraid your husband will have to contact them and ask.. or just wait until he gets his passport back. Like someone else said,..he should have asked the consular officer, it wouldn't have taken the officer that long to answer a simple yes or no. Keeping my fingers crossed for you guys!

This road we have chosen is not an easy path..it's hard on all of us. We all miss our spouses/loved ones. He should just call them right away and ask, that's what I would have done. It's been 10 months since we started this journey. I've been lucky and been able to visit my hubby twice during this process. My interview is not until October 24th.. hopefully I'll be able to move sometime mid November,.. so a one year process. Believe me, I totally understand that you miss him.

I do really hope you'll be with him soon too. It really made me cry that what he said in the consulate was he wanted to go here because he wanted to do a surprise wedding proposal on our anniversary this coming 30th. I know there's a reason behind about waiting game, but I'm glad we never had a chance giving up with each other in the midst of circumstances we face. LDR is hard though.

Indeed a LDR is hard.. my husband and I have been traveling back and forth for 8 years now.

Good luck on your journey!

According to your profile, the visa applied for is J-1? J-1 is a non-immigrant visa for exchange visitors, so short-term university professors/scholars, students, researchers etc. In response to the question "why do you want to go there?" the appropriate response would be "to participate in the program / to do research / to study at x university", not "to propose to my girlfriend" as that could be interpreted as intent to stay in the US. In that case, a tourist visa (if he intends to return afterwards - but then he still should say: to visit my girlfriend and go sight-seeing) or a fiance (K1) visa (if he wants to stay) would be more appropriate.

If status changed to refused then most likely he didn't get visa. It happens they will mail his passport back as they do the same way after approval

We were not attending his interview to analyze what went wrong.

Who's on J1 visa? you or him? Might have been denied by mentioning you also.

Oh, what a day, what a lovely day!
