I do not know him personally, but I do have family members that live in the region and the city he was mayor. They have met and spoken with him to great lengths. If you want I can show you a picture of my nephew actually meeting him after a protest in the city my nephew was covering for his newspaper.

The thing with the extrajudicial killings is that it has been happening in Davao City and some parts of the region for almost 20 years now and IT WORKS. If there is someone who is a drug pusher or thief/robber. They will come to your house and tell you to either "clean up your ways or move out of the city". If they do neither of those things then that person is killed. Do not expect the police to have any mercy for you if you try to fire at the police because they will not have mercy for you and you WILL die. I will give you an example from a couple years ago about him and his policies in Davao. Kidnap and Ransom gangs are a big thing in other parts of the country, and this gang kidnapped a women for ransom in Manila, then a nationwide kill or apprend order was issued about the gang. They took her down to Davao City to wait for the money and the Davao City police were alerted to their presence. So they set up a sting operation for the gang when the went to pick up the money from a bank.

So they went to pick up the money from the bank and a gun fight ensued with police. When one of the kidnappers tried to surrender when he used up all of his ammo the police shot and killed him all on video. The people in the government in Metro Manila were mad and wanted charges pressed against the police officer. Duterte stepped up and said that he would cover ANY legal charges for that police officer and that "if you wanted to die, then come down to Davao". Needless to say the officer is still out and not in jail or prison.

This all comes about because the Philippines has a inept and corrupt judicial system. Where only the richest and corrupt can have any sort of "Quick Justice". There is no bail if you are not rich, you will then rot in a overcrowded jail for sometimes years before your simple case is heard in wither you are guilty or innocent. Also there are laws on the books for elderly and minors to get away scoot free of ANY sort of crimes even if they are caught red handed. So that is why the people of the philippines are happy that something is actually being done about the issue of drugs and crime. Which the drug Shabu(Meth) is very widespread in the philippines and is usually brought in by the Chinese.

you don't have to show me any pictures, i was never saying anything about durete so far as how things are playing out in the philippines. my comment was regarding americans failing to see the superiority of our way of justice: due process. it's totally weird to me to hear adult american men try to sell me on extrajudicial killings, not to mention how many times you and nb have repeated that 'the people love him' like, have ya'll taken any history classes? do you not have that double take moment of intuition that kicks in when 'everyone' has fallen in line behind a leader? i don't know about you, i get the heebie jeebies whenever folks start forgetting why due process is superior and forgetting how megalomaniacs can get branded as robin hoods. i see all that as a large crock, and while i'm glad i live in america and not the philippines, i can't help but see similarities in character between durete and trump, who i assume you think has some pretty good 'unconventional' and thereby good, ideas.

Duterte has thus far been uncharacteristically quiet in regard to his ASEAN neighbours where there is significant unease about his leadership. For many he is fuelling an already tense Sino-American confrontation to little end. Somewhat hypocritically, Duterte is prepared to infringe on Indonesian sovereignty to seek mercy for convicted Filipino drug trafficker Mary Jane Veloso. While it is a noble effort, Duterte may well struggle to get far with President Widodo given his push to reinstate the death penalty back in the Philippines, and his lawless campaign of murder against drug users and dealers.

Everybody loves him...that's why he was elected with an overwhelming almost 40% of the vote. I know those who support him and I know those who don't. Of course, those who don't are much quieter about it than those who do.

He is definitely following through with his campaign promises as far as drugs. I disagree with his methods but that is why almost 40% of the people chose him. He's making the country better in one aspect but at what cost?

He is totally lost when it comes to foreign policy. He has an obvious anti-American streak in him which isn't good for his country. He talks tough to America and the UN but kisses up to China. He's should just hand the West Philippine Sea to China right now. In this area, he is not doing anything good for his country.

I don't know if my opinion matters on this but, if it helps, we also own land there. sort of.

Thank you! I was somewhat accused of only knowing uneducated Filipinos who don't live in the Philippines and this didn't know what I was talking about when one of the guys I know just came back, has a fiance and family that love in Philippines.
