I-94 is for nonimmigrants only, not immigrants.

Don't worry I have to go back there on Monday because I showed her my passport with the visa together with the stamp on the POE plus my social security card still she was talking about I-94 and I became confused and left the office I will meet her on Monday imagine some of them doesn't know their job still they are working in a government firm

Unfortunately immigration is a patchwork when it comes to state DMVs, and driver's licences and ID cards.

Sometimes they know what they're talking about, but much more often than not they don't. If you have issues, just ask to speak to a supervisor. Keep going up the chain until you find someone who actually knows the law and procedures. By asking for an I-94 after they've seen that you entered on an immigrant visa, the first person you spoke with has demonstrated that they don't know much. And at the end of the day, they are a DMV employee. It isn't their job to know about immigration, for the same reason that I don't ask my mailman how bad a rash on my arm looks. It's completely different knowledge and skillsets that have unfortunately been forcibly brought into alignment and produced the unholy union of state and federal governments that lies before us in issues such as this.

State DMVs are just a mess even for USC. I was moving to Colorado from Kansas. I called and asked what I needed to get a CO DL. I was told I needed proof of CO residence, and my KS DL. After waiting for 2 hours, I get called up and show the lady my KS DL and my lease to my apartment with my new CO address. She looks at my KS DL and looks at it and looks at it. She hands it back to me as she tells me I need to come back tomorrow with my BC. I promptly reach into my pocket and pull out my US passport and ask her if this will work? I could have sworn I heard her sigh as she said "yes."

It seems that we the tax paying customers have to know about our particular situation and education the people that are serving us. Go back. When asked for the I-94 number, just politely state that the I-94 is given to non-immigrants to the US and you are already a LPR. If that does not satisfy them, ask for a supervisor. I would have to bit my tongue with the supervisor that that person needs more training .

Did you check your states requirements? Every state is different.

My husband had to show his passport with visa, have his SSN, birth certificate and two pieces of residency proof one that had to be at least 30 days old.

We had all that he took his written/knowledge test August 5th. His road test is September 15th.

Check your states requirements.

So please what else did I need to get a driving license since I came in with my Nigeria driving license

  • You can drive legally in the U.S. for one year using a driver's license from your home country andan International Driver's Permit (IDP).
  • You must get your International Driver's License in your home country before you arrive in the United States. The United States does not issue IDPs to nonresidents.

States have a requirement that you get a state driver's license once you are resident - I believe this is all states. I know someone in CA who was fined for driving on an international/ home country license rather than a state one. The length of time you have before you have to get a state license differs by state, but so far I've never heard of any where it is as long as a year.

yes, it's correct but at the same time there is that saying I gave above and foreigners usually are forgiven, even driving no international permit, just their country permit but in English, it works for several months, specially if there is a delay with the green card. I did see it in the states where are more immigrants. Sorry, I am not arguing, the best is to get the local DL but even we Americans are not so fast changing our out of state DL. I am just trying to help as I know the people need to drive and the documents are not arriving.
