Edit: Clerks offices are frequently located in city halls, no?

I think County Clerks tend to be in the county courthouse, but I guess it can vary from place to place. Mine was actually in a former Walmart building a mile from the courthouse. The county leased extra space because of crowding in the main courthouse.

Thanks again everyone for your replies, very much appreciated. Sorry for my misleading profile, lots has changed the last few months and I'm actually now going to be arriving in Massachusetts as my fiancee is about to begin her course in Boston (she grew up in California), so I guess the wedding and certificate could be either MA or New York? MA looks like it's a 3-day wait to get the license and then a couple weeks for the certificate, but I'm going to investigate this a bit more unless of course anyone on here can share their experiences in this area!

In NY you have a 2 hour waiting period after picking up the license. When getting married at a city hall - I did in NYC - you can pick up certified copies of the certificate straight away.

Thanks - when you say you can pick up certified copies straight away, was that actually in the city hall/nearby in Manhattan or did you have to travel upstate to the vital records office?
