Health insurance in US. Moving from France to US

Hi everyone,

My husband and I currently live in France. I have US citizenship and he has a cr1 family based visa. We will be moving in September/October. I called the health insurance marketplace (Obamacare) and they told me since we have 0 income in the US as of now, we would not be eligible for financial help to pay health insurance because we are under $16000 (annual income) therefore we would have to pay full price for a plan (from $300 minimum per month) until I/we get a job.

We plan on using the health assistance from his bank account card (visa premier card) which covers 90 days of assistance if needed.

This of course in case I don't find a job within the first few months, we want to secure a bit of health coverage just in case.

Does someone know how to pay less than $300 of monthly coverage, with no income the few first months?

Thanks a lot

moving from a foreign country to the usa qualfies you for a special enrollment period with Obamacare. there are plenty of high deductible plans that are pretty cheap and will prevent you from going broke by a trip to the emergency room. you do however need to sign up within 30 or 60 days (I forget the time frame) of arriving for the window to be open or else you need to wait for open enrollment.

Thanks a lot for your reply. But as indicated on the i864 affidavit of support form, that both the joint sponsor and I have signed, they mention means tested benefits, and the fact that the sponsor has the obligation to support the sponsored immigrant in order to not get means tested benefits. Isn't Medicaid a means tested benefit? I may be wrong

Thank you so much

You are in Florida, right?

immigrants are not eligible for medicaid (only emergency medicaid) untill they have reached 5 years of waiting period.
