Travelling to and from Canada with Green Card

Yesterday I travelled to Buffalo, NY via Canada (road) and used my 2-year green card and UK passport at both the Canadian and US POE's. All was fine until the way back when I handed my passport and green card to the US border officer at Port Huron. He asked why I had handed him two documents and whether I was entering the US as a UK or a US citizen (yes, he really said that). I said I was entering as a permanent resident and as I am not a US citizen, that is the reason why I produced my (current valid) UK passport. He then asked where I lived and I replied that my husband and I are stationed in Germany on government orders but were heading back to the US as we are currently on vacation for two weeks and had been to Buffalo for the day to visit family (all true). He then demanded that I produce what he called a 'travel document' (his words, not mine) and proceeded to tell me that he would have to check a supervisor as to whether to let me back to the US because I was currently residing in Germany (he wasn't buying the government orders/army thing at all) and was not carrying one of these so called travel documents. He would not stop going on about it and was adamant that I needed one. He eventually let us in but not without a snarky comment.

My questions are can I actually gain entry back into the US by road using just my green card? And can anyone shed any light on the 'travel document' the officer was referring to? My ROC window doesn't open until March 2017. I travelled to Buffalo twice last summer via Canada using my green card and UK passport and I experienced no problems.

For travel document, the closest I can come up with is he could've been (mistakenly) referring to a re-entry permit as you currently live in Germany as GC holder.

In response to your question, I always advise to travel with both a Green Card and your passport; however, only the green card is required to enter the US. See the rule here .

Good point about the re-entry permit, I hadn't thought of that, but now you mention it, it makes sense.
