Immigrants traveling to the US to nurse (as in care for) family or help babysit is a sensitive topic but there can be repercussions. Most foreigners don't think anything of it because it is common thing to do when family is in need. Some have never have any problems but others have had their tourist visa revoked or denied entry when discovered they were helping family. You can do a search on the board to read cases.

Just wanted to clarify that helping family is perfectly fine but a line has to be drawn.

For example, if a woman has her first child and wants her mother to visit to help out, if she comes and watches the baby while her daughter takes a trip to the grocery store or takes a nap to relax. Knits the child blankets and sings lullabies to sleep. It is perfectly fine.

But if the mother comes over for 6 months and watches the baby Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm so the parents can go back to work full time and not pay for daycare... THEN it is a problem. It is considered work.

The same examples can be made for nursing.

A lot of people will claim that both examples is simply "helping out", when there is really a significant difference.

The mom was 8+mos pregnant, expressly came to the US to give birth. She was ambulanced to the ER and gave birth. She stayed a month after, of course to get her baby a US Passport to travel back.

How a woman in a third trimester pregnancy "helps out" a grandma is beyond me.

Best bet is to not stiff US taxpayers and make full payment. Like I said earlier, this comes across as self serving. You'd only be paying because she wants the visa now. Chances are slim at best.

It does not matter how it comes across. If they pay back what Medicaid shelled out to the hospital then IMHO the lady has a decent chance to get a tourist visa as that sounded like the CO's only problem.

The intention wasn't to not pay the bill. She was never sent any bill. They asked her a few questions and gave her the insurance card. If all this was intentionally, we wouldn't have applied for her visa again.

If you walk into a restaurant and after your meal, no one comes to as you to pay the bill and you walk out, it is considered "Theft of service" whether you did so unintentionally. Even if the family in the US paid for it, your mum didn't try to at least Thank the person and just left. She would have found out that way.

But I am not here to judge you or your mum but just to point out that you have no excuse.

The hospital won't release her information to you due to confidentiality rules that applies strictly in medical field. I doubt they want your mum to come to the hospital in person.

They will however, speak to her on the phone instead you or anyone else.

You can do a 3-way call with the hospital and you and your mum.
