onto the tax Q:

(I am hoping I can do our canadian taxes using QuickTaxWeb.ca as our US Taxes already cost us $280)

I have the little issue that I was a resident of Canada for 2 months. I landed Sept 27, and left Nov 26. I had to get the PR to be able to DCF in Toronto, and I did get a Social Number, but didn't work in Canada; but I worked in U.S. Jan-June 13 06.

When QuickTax asked if we wanted to do both of our returns at the same time, I said yes. When I put in "0" income for me (canadian) it didn't like it at first. Should I restart and just do my husband's return by himself? (since I made -0- I assume I don't have to file?)

OR Do I have to file as "Newcomer"? Even though I was PR only 60 days? Does it matter I made zip in Canada?

If I'm reading that page right, a newcomer would have to claim "World Income" which changes our tax refund considerably.

I assume even though only there 60 days, I would have to say I have a Social # (I read in another post, write "US Citizen" there and you don't report USC's income). ?? I am all confused!!

Me putting my US income (as "world income") for those 6 months drops my hubby's refund by $1,000

Well I'll talk to myself here. lol, I completed quicktax, and selected "became a resident" and also "ceased being a resident" putting the dates in/out and also put my US income as world income outside canada and I hope this is right! I guess I better call revenue canada and ask a few Q's.

Yes they can mail ur cheque tothe USA, Ur leaving Cnada return, goes to a differnt mailing address than ur "normal" canada income tax does. http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/nonresidents/menu-e.html

Glad you finally got the greencard. (You have to write a book ... a comedy).

Taxes are a headache and even expensive cross-border experts disagree. I was audited by Rev Can and got it sorted out by cross border tax. Wish I could say something nice about Serbinski but he disappeared when I had to respond to Rev Can about the return they prepared.

Software may not capture all our issues, so be prepared for questions. Good luck and don't drink any green beer.

How it works for emigrants is the same for immigrants... you don't have to report any income that you made before you immigrated to Canada. In this case, you would put the date that you entered Canada as a PR on Page 1 of the return. You would only include any income that you made after that date... nothing before...
