Madison, Wisconsin is the best city for walking; Newark, NJ is the worst

Madison, Wis., tops the list of "Best Fitness-Walking Cities" judged by the American Podiatric Medical Association and Prevention magazine.

Rounding out the top five on the list -- based on factors such as walker-friendliness, accessibility of parks and the percentage of adults who walk for their health -- were Austin, Texas; San Francisco; Charlotte, N.C.; and Seattle.

Madison came in first in the ranking of 100 cities because it adopted a "walker-friendly plan" 10 years ago. Austin, meanwhile, was lauded for its 50 walking trails.

Newark, N.J., ranked No. 1 among the "Worst Fitness-Walking Cities of 2007" because of its high crime rate, few parks and low percentage of people who take mass transit or walk for exercise.

Other "Worst Fitness-Walking Cities" include Laredo, Texas; Miami; Hialieah, Fla.; and Detroit.

The list of 100 cities appears in the April edition of Prevention magazine. © UPI

No surprise that Newark would be at the bottom--its closeness to NYC puts it there anyway!

Would running from muggers help or hurt the score?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

I'm dayum proud. The only place I've lived longer than Minneapolis was Madison, and it's very walkable/bikeable. IMO, one of the best small cities in the country that I've been to.

I wonder what other cities they compared. I mean, I can think of many cities that would be worse than Newark for walking around in. Camden and Trenton, for two. Orlando, for one outside New Jersey. At least Newark has a nice downtown shopping area. I used to walk around it a lot when I worked there.

Newark is #100.

Orlando is # 63.

Camden and Trenton were not ranked.

I can't find anything on methodology used. Maybe you will have better luck - http://www.apma.org/s_apma/sec.asp?CID=251&DID=16779

It says they used the 100 most populous cities and then just ranked them.
