Hello everyone,

My wife and I will be traveling to Ukraine soon and she has her 2 year green card but she changed her name so now the Ukrainian Travel Passport and Green Card last names do not match.

Which name would we use to book a flight? I think its the Passport name but not sure. Please share your experience and knowledge.

Thank you!

Definitely use the passport name, and use the passport for checking in at the airport as well as going through immigration in the Ukraine. The GC will be used for re-entry into the US at immigration and they usually don't compare airline tickets to ID at that point, but as Lainie stated, keep a copy of the marriage license with you just in case they do ask. This is fairly common, and there are a lot of posts related to question. Also, as you will find out, it is very difficult and a time consuming process to change the name in a Ukranian or Russian passport. There is a very good thread about this in the Russian/Ukraine regional section.

Good Luck!

She should book the ticket in her passport. Should should carry the marriage certificate with her to show she is the green card holder.

Thank you!

Thank you! I did hear about taking the certificate with us when we travel, we will do that.

It is hard to change, you are right.

Great advise for the check in process at the airport, it makes sense that way. Ukraine or the airline should not care about a green card while traveling there. Its only for the way back.

I think when you are boarding the plane in Ukraine for the return part of the trip they will ask for a Green Card so that they know that you have document that you can use to enter the country you are traveling to before getting on the plane. I am a bit worried about that because Ukraine customs can be very weird.

When my wife and I came home from Russia last Summer, it was only the airline that cared about documentation for our destination. Russian immigration never asked for her GC when leaving.
