Don't forget to consider tuition paid when doing your tax return or doing tax planning. It could reduce your taxes significantly and lower the overall net cost of school for you, whether you're paying in-state or out-of-state fees.

That will be good for next year tax season not this year since OP has yet to incur those charges and they will be reflected on next year (1098-T from school)

EAD is not enough for instate Tuition.

Better to wait for your Green card.

My mistake... I could have sworn I changed classification based on my EAD, but it may have very well been my AOS as I received them within a month of each other.

Also, I second the community college suggestion. If you transfer to a 4 year university afterwards to get a bachelors degree, there really is no difference other than a much cheaper education.

I third the Community College suggestion. There should be one in your county. They're easy to get into, relatively cheap and like others have said you can transfer to another college later. Also most of the course credits you obtain will get accepted by the college you transfer to.

My husband is in the process of registering for class this week and the classes will start next week. You need to see what OK requirements are for claiming residency for tuition purposes. (http://www.okhighered.org/current-college-students/residency.shtml) What applies in one state will not always apply in another state. My husband needs to get his credits transferred, but will take US history and US government classes until we get get his foreign transcripts evaluated.

We will pay the out-of-state rate. One three-credit hour class will cost $544. Even when we get his GC, we will need to wait for November 2016 for his TX residency to kick in for tuition purposes. Therefore, our plan is for him to finish up easy classes at the community college and then transfer them into a university. FAFSA allows you to apply for student loans from the government (and apply for Pell grant if your income qualifies you); however, you can only apply for FAFSA if you have a GC or conditional GC.

For us, we expect to have the GC within a year in order to qualify for the in-state tuition and student loans, if needed. Look into the educational institutions around you. It's about the time when classes start, but even if you missed that boat, they still may offer flex-terms, where some may start February, March or later in the semester.
