That's not true. People on tourists visas and student visas, for example, are in the US legally and can't get SSNs.

Ok, I stand corrected, those visa's were not what I was thinking about....we are talking typically about a K1 Visa, or a Visa that is leading to permanent status in the US.

Sorry for not being more clear....

Cheers,

Curt

Other Visa's well depends.

Students on F1 Visas can get SSNs. They are just not able to work without authorization which is stated on the bottom of the SS card.

Students with EAD can get SSN's, do not believe they can otherwise.

Like H4's.

Students on F1 visas can only get SSNs if they have EAD, which means they are either on OPT or CPT.

Many years ago EVERY student that came here on the F1 were able to get an SSN! obviously, many people just came here on an F1, got an SSN and dropped out, which led to alot of abuse. This was pre-2000 i believe.

Therefore, the ONLY way you can get a SSN is if you have an OPT/CPT (or a job offer letter) which means you finished your degree as to control the overpopulation of SSN's

CPT is only available if you haven't finished your degree, as it implies that it the work is a graduation requirement.

In the state of Washington, we already have the option to get an enhanced driver license that meets the requirements of DHS/TSA. It costs $3/yr of validity remaining on your license. It requires an in person visit to the DMV.

Good point. I wonder what the stats are for the issuance rate of EDLs in those states that issue them?

Many years ago ANYBODY could get a SSN, now you need a reason. F1 in itself is not one.

SSN is not work authorisation, just a SSN.
