DHS has announced that they will begin phasing in enforcement of the REAL ID Act. This phased in enforcement of the Act may result in problems for residents of some States that have yet to comply with the provisions of the Act.

Until the dust settles, it may be prudent for USCs and Permanent Residents of some States to consider carrying an additional form of DHS-acceptable identification for domestic travel.

As stated by Boiler, federal law already requires LPRs 18 or over to carry their green cards on their person at all times. That can be used as ID in all 50 states.

Take the time to read more information and the phase-in plans of the Act by DHS. This issue could affect USCs and LPRs doing some domestic travel. I am a USC in one of the states that has not been given an extension. I could conceivably have an issue at the TSA checkpoint for domestic travel, if the the only government-issued photo ID was my Washington-state driver's license. The WA DOL, and several other states, have to get their act together in order to comply with this law. Of course, a lot depends on how the bureaucrats at DHS phase-in enforcement, and the respective states' DOL/DMV work this out.

BTW, I am a home-grown citizen, and so as the old movie line goes, "I don't need no stinkin' Green Card!" Thankfully, I have several other federal and state-issued IDs that suffice as a government-issued photo ID, should a problem arise.

A passport card would probably be the most convenient.

The states have had a long time to become Real ID compliant. The fact that many of them chose to drag their feet for years over the issue is entirely their own faults.

In the state of Washington, we already have the option to get an enhanced driver license that meets the requirements of DHS/TSA. It costs $3/yr of validity remaining on your license. It requires an in person visit to the DMV.

Passport is the obvious one.

But more than half of Americans don't have a passport. All the states that are noncompliant or which will start enforcement on January 10 (Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, Washington) are colored as having less than 50% of people having passport in this report (further Missouri and New Mexico are colored as having less than 40%). I don't see them banning that many people from flying.

I do, because they've had plenty of warning that this was coming. Guess we'll find out in less than a week.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see DHS roll over and issue more blanket waivers, because they've already done that on several occasions.

I have the same experience here in Washington state. I went to get my SSN after we got married, however they don't want to issue SSN for me. My husband wont take NO for an answer as we made a research here in VJ that this will happen because some Government employees were not educated or knowledgeable about USCIS or Visa legal processing issues. We explain nicely, the gal ask her/his supervisor and finally agreed to issue me one but it will be NOT in my married name.

Anyone that is here legally in the US can get a SSN, this is issued by the Federal Government and the rules are the same anywhere in the US.

Sounds like you were dealing with an uneducated SS Representative or your husband did not have the proper status or documentation.

When my wife, here legally...went to get hers...she was also told no, we had to educated the SS Representative and then she found out we were correct....

Do not take no for an answer....check out the requirements and keep pushing... :-)

That's not true. People on tourists visas and student visas, for example, are in the US legally and can't get SSNs.
