I'd like to give you some encouragement on your worries about living there.

Central American living is awesome. I lived in Nicaragua (2nd poorest country in the western hemisphere) for 2 years. In fact, if this visa stuff don't work out for myself, "so long and farewell" to the states cuz I'm outta here. You'll discover that there are many ways around the inconveniences of not having things that us gringos are used to. Central Americans are very resourceful people!

For example. Most people, including myself during my time there, have an ample supply of water with a big 'ole barrel (caught the rain too) for cooking and washing. And when the city water was turned on, we leave the spigot on and let the little trickle re-fill the barrel for as long as the city kept the water running.

Didn't have a/c but did invest in an oscillating fan (which was the equivalent of $7 US). Cheap and worked wonders

As far as a job, I don't know if you are bilingual but you'll pick up the language quickly since you'll be completely immersed in it. You could get a job in a school that teaches American kids. Could get a job in a hotel. Could even get a job teaching people how to speak English. Cost of living is considerably cheaper, as well as cheaper health care

So if it comes down to you packing up and moving in the end, keep your chin up. It'll be ok! There will be some adjustment but you'll get through it :-)

You'll survive AND your family will be whole and together which is so important.

Even if so, the e-mail or phone consultation is surprisingly reasonable. For the record, I got far, far more from that investment than I thought I would.
