Agreed, they are generally very unimportant unless you have a weak case overall.

I also couldn't find a source about getting RFE'd for not being notarised, so I couldn't, uh, swear that it's true. Might just be old man memory.

Either way, if I were going to include them (and I did include a couple for my I-485) I would get them notarised.

I included one in this package and did two with my I-130 as well. Previously one was from my mother, who was also the minister at our wedding, and it was not notarized. The other from his best friend and it was. Notarization in most of Canada is a great deal more expensive and time consuming as most notaries are lawyers. I've paid $50 just for a single notary but no less than $35. It's significantly easier in Colorado with every UPS store having one and only charging $5. This time we included one from his co-worker who helped us house hunt and has helped me car search too. He had signed it already.
