You'll need to fill out a form DS-11 and submit it in person to a passport agency (most post offices do this). Make sure to bring all supporting documents and make a photocopy of each document. You will also need passport-sized photos of your child and the appropriate fees.

It's more common in the Asian culture, it's a cultural thing.

OP does the child have a father on his birth certificate? The passport will probably be your hurdle, they could hassle you at airport but probably not.

Says on US State Dep's website that:

Both parents/guardians must appear in person with the child and provide consent, authorizing passport issuance to the child. If one parent/guardian is unable to appear in person, then the DS-11 application must be accompanied by a signed, notarized Form DS-3053: Statement of Consent from the non-applying parent/guardian.

If the child only has one parent/guardian, evidence of sole authority to apply for the child must be submitted with the application in the form of a:

• Court order granting sole legal custody to the applying parent (unless child’s travel is restricted by that order)
• A court order specifically permitting the applying parent to apply for the child’s passport
• Judicial declaration of incompetence of the non-applying parent
• Death certificate of the non-applying parent
• Photocopies and notarized copies are unacceptable

Yep simply not knowing where or who the other parent is doesn't cut it, alot of people would scam if that was the case. Should be easy to get something from the court though I would imagine in this case.

All of these scenarios and response will work if your child's father does not come after you for taking the child away.

You are not only taking the child away outside the US but you are also leaving the child there.

I don't know what goes into that but that's something to think about.

I for one, would love to have my children experience life outside of the US for a while.

I agree with you but it is not just asian culture. It is common among immigrants. Lots of Africans send their American-born kids back home to learn "common sense"..lol

There is no problem with you coming back without the baby.

Your problem is getting a U.S. passport for the baby. Since you know who the father is, leaving his name off the birth certificate does not solve your problem. He is known, so you will need his permission or a court order to get a U.S. passport for your child.

That's wrong. I know who my child's father is, but him not being on the BC gives me full legal custody. I did not have any problems getting her passport.

If the father is not on the BC, the father DOES NOT need to appear. They never even asked me about him once they saw the BC. You will need to bring the BC with you because they may check as you leave the US and when you enter Thailand.
