Police vs. RCMP check & Why do I call NVC?

Hello,

We received our NOA2 last week and we're starting to gather documents for the next steps. I went to Toronto Police Services to request a police clearance certificate and it said at the top of the form that they no longer give any information about criminal/non-conviction charges (or something along those lines) and to go to the RCMP website if I needed that information. For the K1 process, is a police clearance certificate from TPS enough or do I need to do a check through the RCMP? (Note: I have no criminal convictions.)

Also, I just want to confirm that the reason people start calling NVC 2 weeks after their NOA is to get their MTL (or applicable consulate) number, so that they can check the status of it on the CEAC website, correct? Is this the alternative to waiting for Packet 3 in the mail?

Thanks

I don't know about the police cert, my fiance was just going to go down to his local station and ask for which ever one covers statewide for Ontario and they can't do it to point him the right way.

As for the NVC, yes, it also helps if you -can- do packet 3 before you get the paper packet 3. Example: We were able to do Packet 3 July 16th (the date MTL logged the case), we did it on July 23rd and received packet 4 the same day. We didn't receive the hard copy packet 3 in the mail until the 25th or 26th. We just kept it for our records since we had already done it.

Some people have said they've never recieved anything from the NVC or from Montreal which is why people contact Montreal about having their case and such, in the case they never get their paper packet 3.

Packet 3 doesn't necessarily come "in the mail". I received it by email the day (or day after) it was logged in MTL.

I went to my local police station, and just to be safe, requested the RCMP clearance as well. The local station took my fingerprints, sent the request by email, and I had the letter within 10 days.

If you lived in more than one province, you may either need to go the RCMP route or to multiple provincial stations...just my thoughts, not for sure. The cost for the Ontario clearance was only $10, but I think I paid $75 for the RCMP one. I probably didn't need it, but as I said, I preferred to be over-documented, rather than under.

We never recieved a packet 3 email. Some do come in the mail as we got ours last week. I recieved a letter telling me that they recieved our case and that packet 3 would be mailed to my fiance, the same day fiance checks his mail and got packet 3. =]

The police certificate needs to check CPIC to be valid for US immigration purposes. http://www.cpic-cipc.ca/index-eng.htm
