You can go directly to Social Security office, and apply there.

Print out your I94 and you should be good

We waited 2 days due to jet lag (24 hour flight).....

~Moved from K1 Process to SSN Forum~

~Inquiry about SSN~

(mod hat off)

Welcome to the forum.

Check out this great link: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/405546-ssn-howto/

You will need your a copy of your I-94. Even though things are generally smoother with the advent of the electronic I-94. There have been instances of hiccups in the system, where the local the SSA office cannot find your record in the SAVE database. That will delay you getting your SSN. The card will be mailed to you.

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Sorry, one more question, do they give you your ssn number on the spot?

No, they will not give you a number on the spot. It usually takes 10-14 days to receive the card.

Good Luck!

From the link that I found through Google search:

Proof of Age and Identity

A person is required to establish proof of age and identity by submitting to the issuing clerk one of the following age related documents:

  1. Birth Certificate
  2. Baptismal record
  3. Naturalization record
  4. Census record

And one of the following identity related documents:

  1. Driver's license
  2. Passport
  3. Employment picture ID
  4. Immigration record

REF: https://www.health.ny.gov/publications/4210/

Unless I missed something, I saw no other mention of SSN, except for changing name.

You are welcome.

Can I obtain a Social Security number as soon as I go through the Port of Entry with my K-1 Visa or do I have to wait? (New York state)

(New York State) foreign passport is enough for marriage but if you want you can get your SSN 2 weeks after of your entry to USA

SSN is only required to get a marriage license if you already have one. If you do not have an SSN, then you just tell them you are a non-resident without an SSN. They typically will use your passport instead. This is for all states. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/558541-where-to-begin/page-3#entry7739253

Since the I-94s became electronic, no need to wait 2 weeks after entry to apply. Print out your I-94, take your passport and go apply as soon as you can after you arrive.
