LPR Registering to Attend College in US

I've registered and been accepted by a local State College here in Florida. It's an exciting time however I've got a (to me) strange email from them today. I've filled out their "Residency Affidavit" send it in and now this email. They stated there's a hold on my account until they can see/make a copy of my resident card. Nowhere on their "Residency Affidavit" does it state I must submit a copy of my card and to be honest it's a bit of an inconvenience to drive over there and show them it. I'm questioning why they'd even demand this? It seems a bit extreme. However this is the first time I've entered formal education in the US. I can't ever remember having to prove my citizenship back home to go to school?

Any insights would be most welcome.

Is it worth the difference in cost from being a resident to being an out of state or foreign student?

It's really simple, just go over there and show them you are a resident.

Hi,

It's about money.

The tuition for an out-of-state student is often 3x to 10x as much as it is for an in-state resident. The burden is on you if you to prove you meet the residency requirements to pay in-state tuition, otherwise you will pay the higher out-of-state tuition.

Asking you to prove that you meet the residency requirements to pay the lower tuition is not extreme. It's normal for every college student in the U.S.

If you think it's an inconvenience to drive over there, then you can choose to pay the higher out-of-state tuition.

Best of luck

That would be an ecumenical matter.

####### biscuits.. lol

Your absolutely correct I'm sure. It's all about how they are going to bill me. I hate having to go out of my way at lunch time but it has to be done. Luckily I have a decent employer who doesn't mind that I do this.

Two hours wasted at lunch time and I've satisfied the requirements of the local college. I think they got me mixed up and didn't know if I was an international student or a resident.

this is normal, actually,

as tuition fees and the pursuit of the proper tuition fees are tantamount pursuits at any college in the USA.

I say turn it over, a scan of your green card or pages in passport (immigrant visa foil stamp and endorsement stamp page) and be done with it.

Thanks, I didn't think as a resident we could get any type of financial aid. Plus i think i make too much to qualify for any aid. Which is fine. I've a good half of a degree to do over here so the costs went be too horrific.

There must be as many definitions of resident as there are government entities.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

It's the same in my university. To apply for in-state tuition waiver, you have to be a US citizen or permanent resident in the first place, so they need to see your green card. You can ask if emailing them a scan would be enough.

I believe in Denver illegals can get in stats tuition, lots of variance.

It varies by state.

Somewhat surprisingly, even a southern state like Texas grants in-state tuition to illegal aliens.
