I'm going to the states tomorrow, civil ceremony August 1st to get the paperwork going and getting me on proper health insurance. Then we'll have a ceremony in the US on September 5 and one ceremony in Sweden next summer for those who can't come on September 5.

As for the wedding anniversary... We'll go with September 5 as for us that feels more like the official wedding day. It will only be the two of us on August 1st and more like a real wedding on September 5.

You can start making tentative plans before you arrive. Also, you usually have 6 months before the K-1 visa expires to enter the US. If you are in need of more time, then you can use that time to plan things out before moving. Many people have an easier time planning a smaller wedding or getting married at the courthouse, and then may have a larger ceremony later.

We chose a tentative date far enough out that we thought could work, but if not, we would push it back. We researched venues, photographers, officiants, invitations, etc. together via the internet, phone and webcam. I went out and looked at the venue that interested us most to get a feeling for the place and meet the people to see if they could work with us. As soon as we knew for sure our date would work, then we ordered the invitations we had already chosen together, the flowers, secured an officiant and photographer and placed a deposit on the venue. Once he arrived in the US, I took him to see the venue in person, we bought our wedding attire, ordered the food, worked with the officiant on the ceremony, and tied up all the loose ends. Buying the decorations and setting things up ourselves worked out for us, and we were able to have the small intimate wedding ceremony we wanted in less than 2 months after he entered the US with his K-1.

We have recently received our NOA2 and currently waiting for interview. In view of this we have started preliminary wedding preparations. However in view of the requirement that we need to marry within 90 days on my entry to the U.S., this will not give us enough time to plan for a wedding ceremony & reception.

Can anyone advice how they did theirs? Did you do a civil ceremony

Yes

and only do the official wedding ceremony later?

Nope...not needed. The marriage by the county judge is totally legal and all that is required.

If so, do u still need an officiant for the official ceremony?

The civil ceremony is the official ceremony. Many have religious ceremonies, but from a legal standpoint, they are not required.

We have been fortunate to have ALL of our people work with us. Our original wedding date was for June 20,2015, but the glitch delayed the visa. That date canceled, but the caterer, photographer , church, and venue all were willing to work with us. My mother had printed up our first wedding invites using Wilton print at home kits . Much cheaper than a print shop, so she has just done them over for our new date. All of the decorations that were bought are still usable. We ordered personalized party favor votive cups from Oriental Trading and luckily, they came with the personalization on stickers we would have to apply ourselves. We bought clear labels and made new ones. My fiance arrived July 4, 2015, our wedding is for August 22, 2015. We considered the justice of the peace route, but our Christian values has led us to wait for the church wedding. We just called all of our people to see when all would be available for the same date and that is the date we went with.
