Hi All

I did so much work today and thought that all was sweet and ready for my medical booked for two weeks time, however...

I was reviewing my vaccination records and I am not sure if I have what I need (despite being immunised for some pretty funky things through my work around the more interesting parts of the world)

Ok so the MMR, I dont have a note for "MMR" but I do have two individual notes for Measles and rubella noted (but no mumps?)

However no 2....

the measles vaccine that i have had twice shows "part one" twice and not part two or i guess the 2nd part of the vaccination.

Questions: do I need to go get the MMR from my Docs? or do the ones I have count?

I only have two weeks until my medical so obvioulsy cant get the part 2 of the MMR before the medical any way. Thoughts?

Thanks all

Rob

I would get an MMR since you have nothing showing immunization for mumps. And there is 4 week waiting period between doses of MMR. At your medical you will be given a waiver for "insufficient time interval".

What about tetanus, diptheria, pertussis? Dates? BTW, P is not for Polio in the Tdap shot.

Hi Nick - thanks and as always extremley helpful

In the last half hour I had come up with that info as you mentioned, I will find a time to squeeze in the first MMR and get the waiver

re the Tdap: I have had a vaccination marked Td/IPV on the Nhs recordsin 2010 - shows as:Diptheria Polio Tetanus but no Pertusiss

I have my medical booked for 1st July. But can't get my medical history until 29th June (tomorrow) I spoke with a nurse last week who checked my records but the computer only goes back until 1992 so she had to send off for the old ones 78-91 printing hence why its taken a lot longer than I assumed it would. She thinks with me and her been roughly the same age I will have had the MMR jabs when I was a baby (Im hoping so) Ill open them up and check tomorrow if I haven't am I best of scheduling the shot the after the medical ASAP and getting my doctors to fax over a letter confirming that I have had either the booster or the first part of the MMR and just bite the bullet and get the other half done stateside?

Check your baby vaccinations - you likely had pertussis, aka "Whooping cough", as a baby.

If you haven't had a mumps vaccine, then you might as well get the MMR now. I'm not sure if mumps is available individually.

As Nich-Nick said, get the MMR now and you won't need the booster. You will get an "insufficient time interval" waiver on your vaccination work sheet as there must be a minimum of 4 weeks between the vaccine and booster. That will be good enough for AOS.

  • Td or Tdap - Tetanus/diptheria/pertussis or get DT, DTP or DtaP and it will be accepted for AOS also. The latest shot must be no longer than 10 years ago or you need a booster. If you have a record of receiving pertussis, then the Td is okay for the booster.
  • MMR - (if born in 1957 or later)-Mumps/measles/rubella. It's two doses in your life, but if you get the first dose, and 4 weeks haven't passed by your medical, they will waive the second dose for "insufficient time interval". If you only had one dose as a child, get a second one before the medical.

Hi I want to refer to those 2 above that were listed in the London guide.

My immunization chart shows vaccine for Rubella in 2001 and for Measles 2 shots : one in 1990 and another in 1996, however I do not have anything for mumps? therefore, should I get the new MMR?

I am a little bit confused with the first one though. My lattes shot for TD shows2002 and another one in 2007 (however, I had another one in 2013 but do not have proof of it, I can't get documentation for that). However, the last one for Di-Te-Per shows 1990 (i was 1 year old) and then just Di-Te in 1995, so I am good with those one???

If you haven't had a vaccine for mumps, then yes, you will need it in some form or another. I've no idea if it is available individually, otherwise you may have to get an MMR to bring you up to date. You need to go and speak with your GP and they will advise what shots you need and what shots are avaiable.

If you had TD in 2007 then you are within the 10 year range (a Td booster must be given ever ten years to remain effective). For immigration/ AOS before 2017 you are fine.

Your DTP/ DT in 1990 and 1995 were the baby formulations. The "Per" in DiTePer means you've had the pertussis vaccination, which is sufficient for your vaccination worksheet. You've also had the adult formula - DT, so that's all fine too.

From what I can see, the only thing you are missing is mumps (which wasn't routinely given until the MMR vaccine). Go to your GP and they will advise you which is the best way of getting it.

That I don't know, but I don't think that counts for your medical vaccination worksheet/ AOS. Only a history of varicella (chicken pox) gets a waiver.

Others on VJ will be able to advise also, though I think you will still need mumps/ MMR to meet vaccination requirements.

Yes get a MMR shot to qualify for your greencard because it is unlikely you will find a dosage of mumps only. Two are required and must be at least four weeks apart. If you get the first and four weeks have not passed by the visa medical date, you can get a waiver. You are addressing this really early, so have time to get two. Right now you have proof of Mumps 0, measles 2, and rubella 1. It needs to be 2, 2, 2.

I am a little bit confused with the first one though. My lattes shot for TD shows2002 and another one in 2007 (however, I had another one in 2013 but do not have proof of it, I can't get documentation for that). You have met the requirements for Tetanus/diptheria/pertussis

Ok, thanks for the info. how about when I had mumps as a child? i think I just found out from my mom. as far as we are aware you can only have it once in your life?

You will have to have immunity to mumps proven with a lab test. Blood can be drawn by your GP and tested for antibodies for mumps, measles, and rubella. If you show proper immunity, then no shots required. If you pay money for the test and it does not show immunity then you still need two doses of MMR. Or one dose if you plan it shortly before your visa exam.

I paid £90 at a travel clinic for blood tests to prove immunity. It was quick and easy and they gave me all the documentation required for the medical which was accepted no problem. If you're happy to get the shot, just do that instead.

I've been to my GP's travel clinic today. What a nightmare!!

I rang for an appointment 5 weeks ago & explained what I needed, the receptionist told me I didn't need vaccinations to travel to the USA so I went through the "I'm not travelling it is for visa use, I need my vaccination records of what I have already had, etc, etc". She finally seemed to grasp what I was saying but still insisted that I booked for the travel clinic nurse.

So today I attend the travel clinic, & it went exactly as I expected - the nurse was as confused as the receptionist, doesn't have my vaccination record to hand (even after I'd insisted they get it when I rang) as it's still on a paper record, keeps insisting I don't need vaccinations to travel to the USA. She would now have to seek out my paper record & ask the practice manager if she is allowed to give me the Tdap & MMR as they don't give it to adults routinely. She said that it's not routine NHS policy to give out vaccinations that aren't for health or travel & that I'd have to pay to have them done - that's OK I said, how much will it cost for the two. She replied that they don't do private vaccinations, I'd have to travel 30 miles to the nearest private clinic!!!!!

She's going to ring me in a "couple" of days to see if there's anything they can do?

Having them done at the medical may be easier for me & just paying that bit extra, at least they should get them right!

Hi, I just wanted to say that my fiancé had mumps in his early 20s. He still went ahead and received the MMR, and had no issues.

gavw72: That is absolutely insane what they put you through. The nurse at my fiancé's GP had no problems giving him the vaccinations under the NHS. If anything she wanted to give him even more shots than was required, but he explained why that was not needed. It took a bit of a run-around and a couple weeks for them to scrounge up a simple print-out of his vaccination record, but it really was not a big fuss.

Can you go somewhere else to receive them that does actually know what they are doing?
