Carpooling is done all the time in the USA- safely. My former boss commuted that way. My dad did it for over 20 years. No problems. It's common in many cities. It's a group thing though (pick up 2-3 people) and a bit more organized than arranging a ride via the internet for a single event.

It's a bit different in DC where you're a whole bunch of people in a car so you can use the HOV lanes to get to work than go with a complete stranger to an event

The moral of this all is don't trust strangers. But I'm a little appalled that you dump all men into this kind of a category.

The bottom of you post: My wife did that carpooling with total strangers thing in Germany too, but I would not be OK with her doing that in America.

Just an update and to thank everyone for weighing in on my situation: We have reconciled and my husband feels sorry about his reaction. He has asked if I still want to go to the meet-up but I really am not bothered anymore. My husband's main issue was more that he felt left out and I guess he and I had different ideas of 'togetherness'. Our situation was really one of miscommunication and we are working towards making sure everything is alright again.

I've not read the whole thread yet but i'm astonished with the amount of negative comments towards the OP.

When i moved and before i got a job my communications circle was limited to my husband and his family and i wanted to meet more people outside of this group because while i have a good relationship with my husband i don't have a lot in common with the rest of the family (different religious views, very different job patterns, etc.) and since i don't drive it would be hard for me to socialize with them more than when we'd go to see them together anyway.

So i also started exploring meetup.com. And it's a perfectly innocent thing - at least the part i did (i did a cooking class + some more specialized IT-related meetups + a game night with Cards Against Humanity). In events where there is a chance of this 'hookup' potential they even give colour-coded badges so you can state to others you're not looking for anything other than fun. I tell my husband when i do it and he gives me rides to and fro every now and then (or i take a bus) and since i know he wouldn't be interested in the stuff i go to i don't offer it to him. He has enough hobbies to entertain himself too, like golfing.

It seems to be a trust issue and i'm not sure where it came from for you. I'll second Ontarkie's suggestion to show him the pages of the meetups you want to go to (and maybe look into bus options for getting there?..) but you shouldn't be feeling guilty for doing that and you don't have to apologize for trying to find friends. That's ridiculous.
