No, we did not. Any documents in Vietnamese or English do not need to be translated.

is it because its at the consulate in Vietnam that it doesn't require translation for Vietnamese docs?

That is correct. Any documents that are not in Vietnamese or English must be translated to English. It is also stated in the K-1 and IR1/CR1 instructions as per the links below.
