The facts say a gun in the home makes you less safe. You are free to think the opposite and be wrong. This is 'Merka!

How do you know his circumstances well enough to make such a comment?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

The FBI, local police departments, SWAT teams, and secret service should demonstrate how much safer America would be by simply turning in, piling up, and destroying their guns.

This would take thousands of openly carried guns off the streets.

Do you think the criminals will be lining up to turn in their guns too? I mean, if it was a law they'd have to obey it like they do now.

The statistic point to higher injury and death yes. But ask yourself, how many people store their firearms in a safe? If you single out "safe owners" for instance I bet you'll see the statistics swing.

(And yes I think every gun owner should own a safe). If you are reading this and want to get into firearms, consider a safe just as important as the ammo or the gun.

You mean there is no honour amongst criminals?? I despair for the American way of life...

I think every car owner should have a breathalyzer in it.

How do you know his circumstances well enough to make such a comment?

Why on earth would I need to know his circumstances? Increased risk is simply that, increased risk.

Read this slowly:

You might be happy to take the risk having a gun in the home poses. But the reality is that a home with a gun is less safe. Quite frankly it's a simple thing to understand.

If you are taking the risk don't do so because you believe that you are likely to find yourself in a John Wayne situation where you and your trusty peacemaker will be saving the day. That's fantasy.

Of course it does. In real life, one lives safer without a gun in the house. That's just a simple fact.

You choose not to own guns and others can choose to own one.

You're pro-choice...... right?

No.... you want to control everyone. Your way or the highway.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I will ruin you day for you . That first sip of coffee you take in the morning . It gives you a risk of choking to death... Such a simple thing to understand .

How did you manage to read that out of what I posted? Try remedial reading comprehension courses. Might help you out.

Exactly! Enough people that live in that fantasy die every year because they believed it was real. Another simple fact of life in this country.

Did you vote for Obama? (2nd time I have asked you this question).

I just don't understand how a male in the USA could have your mentality regarding guns.

I grew up hunting and fishing, I was given a 12 gauge shotgun as my birthday present, it was a big deal for me, It was like becoming a man and going from hunting with a BB gun hunting with a real gun.

It's definitely a cultural issue, not JUST one of a complete lack of gun control. I grew up in a gun owning family, in a pocket of gun owning culture in Canada. The difference is that we don't think of a gun as a tool for self defense. It's not a security system. It's a powerful weapon for the use of killing.

Like VOL, my brother got to start using 'real' guns at the age of twelve and had started out hunting and fishing as a small child. Like VOL, this was an exciting moment for my brother. Unlike VOL, my brother (as stupid as he is and my brother is really damn stupid) does not believe that guns are part of becoming a man. For my brother, it meant he was able to actually kill when he hunted. A gun was not representative simply of manliness, but of the ability to kill. My brother no longer hunts, which means he no longer has a gun as he has no killing use for it.

Even in that little circle of gun owning culture in Canada, it was well known that guns made everyone, especially children, less safe. Guns were not kept at the ready for shooting home intruders. They were kept in locked cases, with trigger locks on, with the ammo in locked cases in another location. Children were not permitted to see the guns outside of a use or cleaning context--and cleaning was done immediately before and after use. I, personally, as a child who was not expected to hunt (hunting tradition in my family does not include the women) never actually saw the guns outside of the cases. I simply never had access to them. I didn't even know where the various cases were kept, as I had no killing use for them.

And I think that's the difference. We see guns as being for killing. Americans see guns as a tool for defending. I've never seen a sign that HAS to declare a space a 'gun free zone' in Canada--even though yes, in my mother's generation (she's 20 years older than me), before the days of school shooting, people DID have gun racks in their cars and, during hunting season, people DID have guns in their cars so they could hunt before and after school. My mother never saw a gun free sign either. Since moving to Texas just under three weeks ago, I've seen gun free signs at places like IKEA. If guns are for killing, it seems absurd that one would need to carry a gun in order to go furniture shopping in a place with a small daycare.

Met in 2010 on a forum for a mutual interest. Became friends.
