Rescheduling Appointments

I am wondering what experiences people have had with rescheduling appointments. My wife and stepdaughter were assigned an appointment for early July. I, the petitioner, would like to attend as well, but will not be able to do so until the end of July. We are concerned that my stepdaughter will have a visa in time to start school at the beginning of September. My concern is that, if I ask for a change of date, the embassy may only give me a much later date. Any advice on what is likely to happen with a request for date change and the importance of the petitioner's presence would be very helpful. If anyone has advice specifically on the Bogota embassy, that would be helpful as well. Thanks in advance.

~~moved to US embassy discussion from IR1/CR1 process and procedures as topic is about rescheduling interviews not the IR1 process~~
