Facebook Investigation for Visa

I read on a k-1 forum on this website about a facebook issue that came up during interview.

My question is, do immigration officers at USCIS/ and or NVC and/ or Consulate lookup your facebook for investigation purposes? I just got bored of facebook and closed it a few months ago.. so I don't even have one. And as for my wife, she likes spending time on facebook so she has one active but she uses my last name with her first name which is not her full legal name- yet. Her legal name is her maiden name.. we never changed her name because all her documents were in her maiden name and we didn't want to spend time changing her last name to my last name before filing the petition. So....... do they try to lookup your facebook when you don't provide it voluntarily? I mean does it help in processing to have your facebook sitting out there for them to search or does it not matter? As you can tell, I'm not a fan of facebook and would rather not have one. Could it be an issue?

Yes, it could be an issue. They can and have denied people for this exact reason before.

An issue for you not having one? No, I don't remember being on the list of required things. An issue for your wife...maybe. Just depends on which way the wind is blowing that day. It shouldn't really matter but if they see she is using one name there and another on documents they might ask questions, even though it's completely dumb as facebook is not any kind of legal document and simply a social network.

Hi,

Someone recently posted that when they said they had provided all their pictures at an interview, the consular officer when into the back room and came back with pictures from Facebook of "an introduction." The couple did not disclose them, and in fact mislead the officer by saying there were no more pictures because they did want it to be mistaken for "a traditional wedding."

Yeah, they search without your permission.

I really hope they dont read too much into it. My husband and I got married at the Ministry of Justice and didnt do a big ceremony for our wedding (thus, no pics of a family wedding), but we are planning to do that when he's here with my family.

Yes. Thank you. It is completely dumb as facebook is a play thing and nothing official. Me and my wife talk daily...... for hours on the phone. Why should anyone have to display their private life on a public platform? Ridiculous.

I hope so too. Best of luck to you guys. My understanding has been that the local embassy is well accostumed to local traditions and such so should be fine.

I do not think they look at every single beneficiary's FB but yes, there have been cases where they do; more in high fraud countries or where there were red flags already.

You not having one is totally fine. She using your married name is fine too, as you ARE legally married(it might be an issue if you were doing a K1)

I see. Well our case is as straight forward as can be so hoping for the best. Thank you.

To clarify, not having a Facebook account is fine (I don't either); the problem may be her using your surname as her name on Facebook. This may lead to them believing you are already married, rendering her ineligible for a K-1 visa.

As I said, this has happened before.

Oh no. You misunderstood. We are married and there is no k-1 in our case. We filed IR-1/CR1 i-130 so she likes using my last name on facebook but we just didn't update her last name from her maiden name to my last on her ID card, passport etc. that's all. Sorry about the confusion.

Ah, when you said you read it on a K-1 forum I took that to mean you were filing for a K-1.

As a CR-1 you won't have any issue then, or at least not with this.

I don't think so. It's private, and they respect people's privacy. Besides, if you don't have an FB account, then they won't care. This issue will only pop up is if you mention it or use it as one of your pieces of evidence. If you do, then obviously they might ask for further details.

When the fiancé of a friend of mine went to his K1 interview, the consulate asked for their past 2 years of facebook messages. Neither of them used their real names on facebook. When they submitted the messages with their oddball fake facebook names on them, the consulate didn't ask any questions about it.They know people often don't use their legal names.

For some it can be an issue if they think there is some dishonesty,

not every petition are looked at on FB but I believe having met at a

site or online may peak the interest of an adjudicator they may check

tf parties are still online & what are they up to...One individual was

on here 2014 trying to find out how to sort out his denial, at the interview

he was shown records of a torrid online relationship & promises after he

married a USC he said it was not serious but it was to USCIS & he

was from a MENA country...Social media have cost many ppl in many ways
