Question about Vaccines/Medical

Thanks for asking this as I am in same position. Trying to figure out which ones are actually required when i have practically no record of any vaccinations given as a child. Have records from military life but all are from 2006 or 2009.

I have no records either. Must be an Irish thing. >.<

The good thing is that the nurse at my GP has the MMR and the 4-in-1 (which has the TdaP, I THINK, don't quote me on that). But she said that any individual ones would have to be ordered because they're not manufactured in Ireland any more.

Try calling your doctor for baby vaccines and your county's primary care health center for ones got in school. They can't find any for me, but maybe you'd have better luck.

Obviously, I assume your consulate will be different but the vaccination requirements will be the same, and I'll direct you toward the 1st post in the UK specific guide for shots. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/474161-london-k1-a-complete-guide/ I'm not sure about the 4 in 1. My fiancé got his shots from his GP, and it didn't cost very much. TD and his first MMR on the same day, and then returned a few weeks later for his second dose of MMR.

Believe me they wanted to give him every shot under the sun, because they don't understand the requirements. :P

Oh I'd believe it! It's hard to find out what you need and what you don't. Your help has been so huge, so thank you. I was preparing myself for spending a few hundred on all the vaccines that they say you 'might' need! This way even two MMR stabs and a TdaP shouldn't be too expensive. We don't have the NHS though, so hopefully the nurse I'm due to see won't charge me like a doctor would (about fifty quid just to grace his chair with my butt cheeks!)

Just take your vaccinations record with you, and they will give you the rest.

I personally do not think this a big deal, just give them what you have, they will take care of the rest.

You are so close to being finished, have a great time with the rest of your journey.,..,so long.,.,but so worth it!

Varicella (chickepox), MMR, Tetanus (Td) are the required shots for immigration work along with a blood test for syphilis (RPR).

Points to remember:

1) If you got MMR or Varicella shot or Varicella infection as a child, you may not need the shots again. You can check the titers in your body which can be done by a blood test. They cost about $50 each (in Nyc).

2) If the titers for either are low, you still need the vaccine.

3) If you need the vaccines, MMR and Varicella need to be taken on the same day or at least 4 weeks apart (so if you get one and titers for the other are low, you have to wait 4 weeks to get the other one, so might as well wait till the titer results are back).

4) Tetanus shot needs to be taken every 10 years, so if your last Td was after 2005, you're fine, otherwise you still need it again.

5) Vaccines are not covered by insurance, most of them are $75-100+ each.

6) There are free clinics that give the vaccines for free (at least in Nyc, maybe other cities too).

Do you have to have all the vaccines before the interview, or can you get them after you arrive in the us before the AOS ?

The vaccinations are not a requirement for a K-1 visa. They are required for when you adjust status. So yes you can get them here in the US if you prefer.

For most adults you only need MMR, Tdap and Varicella. If you already had chicken pox, then you don't need varicella.

No you do not need HepB. HepB is a required vaccine if you are under 18 years of age.

This table will show you a list of all the required vaccinations for AOS based on your age: http://www.cdc.gov/immigrantrefugeehealth/exams/ti/civil/vaccination-civil-technical-instructions.html#tbl1

Zedayn.

so for the medical exam. before we go its best to follow the chart in your link and make sure those are done ? and if those are all done.

then we are good for the medical ?

Thank you for your answer. The point/issues is that I don't have a vaccination record. The health authority can't find me on their system. So I have to get new vaccinations. I just needed to know which ones. The ones mentioned are not dangerous to get again and it's actually cheaper to get them instead of getting tested to see if I had them before.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just to follow up on this topic...

I decided to get my vaccinations that I knew would be needed (and I had no record of) before the medical/interview for several reasons; the two MMR shots have to be taken 4 weeks apart and can cause some ill feelings for a few weeks afterwards. I didn't want to have to go for the interview or do anything important while feeling like #######. I also didn't want to spend a lot of money on vaccinations once in the USA.

Of the four required vaccines, I didn't need Varicella as I had chickenpox when I was a child, and the influenza one is a wait-and-see depending on when everything starts happening. Note: The Varicella vaccine is no longer readily available in Ireland.

I was able to get the first MMR shot and the 4-in-1 on the same day (costing just €20 for both from the local clinic nurse), and made an appointment for 4 weeks later for the second MMR shot. The 4-in-1 is how the Tdap is delivered in Ireland now. It covers Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (which are in the Tdap) and also Polio.

Absolutely not. Not for UK medicals (and I would assume everywhere else). The medical is a flat fee. But each vaccine is extra. A very expensive extra. That's why its often more prudent to get the vaccines through your GP at the NHS, where they may be free or at least cheaper.
