expired green card as only ID for biometrics? :(

So my parents has decided to go for a non-drivers ID. Unfortunately, the only form of ID they has to identify their birthdate is their green card. Their green card was issued in 1985. It has no expiration date. They never realized they had to renew it. Now that they want to get an ID, an old card won't be acceptable.

So they want to go ahead and renew their green card, but the problem is that when it comes to the biometrics, will the building allow them inside with an EXPIRED green card as the ID? There is also a social security card.
