New babies?

The other baby thread seems to have fallen into the annals of VJ history and I can't seem to find it, so I figured I'd see if anyone else is having a baby or just had a baby. We are due with our second girl in July. I am feeling much more prepared with an understanding of US healthcare and whatnot this time but it still can get confusing (we had insurance issues due to a greencard glitch in a computer system at the beginning of this year - they finally fixed it for us). Wondering how you are all doing and whatnot.

I am still working on getting Canadian citizenship for my first daughter. I have sent off the application twice and it was returned both times. The first time I included everything asked for but they told me I had to get all photocopies notarized and sent it back. The second time I paid about $35 to get everything I could possibly think of notarized at UPS and it was sent back to me as something missing again.

BUT THEY WON'T TELL ME WHAT IT IS! AGHH! I am going to take apart this package paper by paper yet again and try to figure it out because I'd like to get her application done with before I have to repeat this process for baby #2! Yeesh.

I'm hoping to get baby girl #2 her US passport and Nexus even faster than my first daughter in hopes that by Christmas we'll be able to zip across the border but who knows with all the wait times in those things.

Just looking to connect :)

Congrats!

I'm pregnant with my first baby...but I'm the USC. I've been around US healthcare my whole life, and it's always confusing! We'll be filing to get baby's UK citizenship after they're born in September. (We find out next week if it's a boy or girl, so then I can use more definitive pronouns!). I know my in-laws are grateful for Facetime/Skype and will be even more so when they have a new niece/nephew 4,000 miles away!

Congrats! I hope UK citizenship for your child goes more smoothly than my Canadian application! My 18 month old daughter is very comfortable with my parents and they're the ones that live in Canada - whereas my inlaws who live 40 minutes away still make her cling to me. I think the biggest difference is that we spent time on Skype regularly so that when she sees them, they are familiar with her. It has helped a lot! My inlaws don't use Skype (although when we do visit - and we see them in person more often than my parents they have a harder time connecting with her - but that's a whole other story). Now when I say "Let's see if Grandma is on the computer!" she will get up and go to the computer and get excited. It's nice to know that distance can be helped! I know when my husband and I were dating we spent hours every day on Skype!

FaceTime/Skype are a lifesaver! And I know it helps my mother-in-law feel like we're not quite as far away as we really are.

I hope that your daughter's citizenship gets sorted soon...how frustrating!

Still part of the Commonwealth...does that make it any better? :) I tend to blame the baby for my struggle moments these days....not sure that one was baby's fault, though!

On a related note I met an American mom down here who had married a Canadian citizen and I said 'oh your kids are dual too!' excitedly, she kind of frowned and said 'no, they would have to abandon their US citizenship to get it' and I said that they really were dual already but you just needed to apply for the proof and wouldn't lose US. She didn't believe a word I said and looked vaguely annoyed. Hey, guess what, dual citizenship is a good thing for your kids, not bad! I swear Canada isn't evil and trying to steal them away! Grump, grump..

Yikes! Good thing the kids can go after it themselves later. YOu would think someone marrying someone from another country would try to look things up for their kids!

I was all set to get Alexis's done a few years ago we got her passport pic done when we were up there visiting, but that was as far as I got. :(

I know right? Reminds me of that senator in the US whose name I am forgetting who didn't realize he was a dual citizen of US and Canada, kept denying it, and ended up abandoning Canadian citizenship. Well hopefully the kids will figure it out themselves one day. Opens up a lot of opportunities. It was the attitude that irritated me more than anything.

Hey if you do apply my main word of advice to you is not to double check or triple check - quadruple check everything you are sending ha! Oh and notarize everything you can lay your hands on. Obviously that wasn't enough to work for me last time but hopefully third time is the charm.

I can imagine the attitude. My husband has family with similar attitude drives me nuts.

Thanks for the tip.

That senator was going to run for president which is why he abandoned the Canadian citizenship. He wasn't eligible as a dual citizen.

Pretty sure he's not going to get it anyhow.

Seems a little silly that's it harder for you guys to get Canadian citizenship proof for your kids than it would be if you were trying to get a CRBA! LOL!! Apparently Canada needs to adopt something similar.
